Market Sizing questions at Mckinsey

Hi,

How common are Market sizing questions in Mckinsey interview process? Are they usually in the first round? I am interviewing with an office in Scandanvia.

Thank you for your reply!

Hi there,

At McKinsey, market sizing questions are not as common as in other firms. Their interviews are usually built around interviewer-led cases, where sizing can come in as one step but rarely as a standalone exercise. You might get a small sizing question within the broader case (e.g., “Estimate the size of the coffee market in Sweden”), but it’s usually embedded rather than the main focus.

They can appear in both rounds, but if you do get them, it’s more likely in round 1. The key is to keep your structure simple (volume × price × frequency) and talk your logic out loud.

Happy to help you prep – feel free to reach out!

Best,
Evelina

Hi,

Market sizing is common at Mckinsey Oslo and Kopenhagen.

I have 2 real market sizing cases available used at MBB Nordics.

Feel free to reach out if you are interested.

Yes, there's a good chance you'll get a market sizing question in Round 1. And a >90% chance you will get at least one market sizing during the whole interview process.

You must be prepared for market sizing questions.

Hi there,

Market sizing questions are definitely possible at McKinsey but not as common as with other firms. McKinsey is interviewer-led and the market sizing question would framed to be a part of a larger case, among a set of other questions to test specific skills.

Market sizing questions generally test to see whether you can structure and breakdown the question, make logical assumptions, calculate comfortably, and communicate clearly. At McKinsey, they care less about having a "correct" number, but more about your logic and approach.

Market sizing is still used in McK interviews.

It's also because it's the simplest and yet ultimate test of consulting, combining structuring, brainstorming, assumption generation and alignment, etc.

I wouldn't say that it's used more or less in the Nordics, but I would prepare for it nevertheless.

Best,
Cristian

Hey there :)

Market sizing questions are fairly common, especially in first-round interviews, but not every case will include one. In Scandinavia, expect them occasionally, usually to test structured thinking and quick estimation.

best, Alessa :)
