Is BCG US considering non-US applicants?

Hi,

I'm a European applying for BCG Experienced hire position. Anyone knows if they're considering non-US applicants and willing to sponsor visa?

Also, how realistic is it to get invited for the interview without a referral?

Many thanks.

Hi,

On visa sponsorship, it really depends on your experience. The general rule is that if you bring something they cannot source locally, they are far more willing to sponsor, and for a senior hire it is your specific expertise that carries the decision more than anything else. So the stronger and more differentiated your profile, the more realistic sponsorship becomes.

On the referral, tied to the same logic: a referral always helps, especially for senior profiles who do not fall neatly into the standard recruiting windows, so I would try to get one. That said, if you are a genuine standout in an area they are actively looking for, you can get in without one.

It would help to understand your profile better to give you more tailored guidance. If you think that would be useful, feel free to DM me and we can set up a quick call to look at this more in depth.

Hi,

Anecdotally from some of my coachees who have tried to applied and friends working in the states - it is a very tough time for non-US applicants.

I would say for MBB, it is still possible if you are going in for a very specific role. i.e. this is a Practice Area hire or Expert track.

Having referrals will significantly help your chances of landing an interview, but it is still not guaranteed.

Hi there,

This information does not necessarily contradict!

Yes, in general, it's difficult to get into the US without working rights. It's even harder if you don't have any ties there.

That said, difficult certainly doesn't mean impossible. Furthermore, different candidates and different offices are, as you may expect, different!

For your specific role, check the current job posting and ask BCG recruiting directly, because sponsorship can vary by role and situation.

Networking/referrals do greatly improve your chances. However, your chances are not zero without a referral. Far from it.

Make sure you're actually networking properly, reaching out to the right people in the right way, navigating the call correctly, and asking for the referral properly. If you truly have given it your all and operated in the best way, then don't worry, you still have a shot without one!

Given that application strategy and networking are central here, I would recommend my Applications course.

hey there :)

Yes, BCG US can consider international candidates and visa sponsorship is possible, but it depends on the specific office, role and hiring needs. Without a referral you can still get an interview, although networking and a strong referral can definitely help.

That said, if you’re currently based in Europe, an easier route can often be to join BCG in your home country first and then pursue an internal transfer to the US later. This can also make the visa process much more straightforward.

Best, Alessa :)

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your questions:

  • First of all, BCG US does consider non-US applicants and sponsors visas in principle, but it depends strongly on your profile. If you bring expertise that is hard to find locally, sponsorship is realistic. If your profile is easy to source in the US market, the visa topic becomes a real hurdle.
  • Moreover, an interview invitation without a referral is possible but clearly harder, especially as an international candidate. So I would advise you to invest in networking: contact BCG consultants in your target offices and establish a connection with them over time.
  • Lastly, for the current sponsorship policy of your target office, I would advise you to reach out to the recruiting department of that office directly and immediately, since unfortunately, no one else can tell you this for certain. As a backup, you could also consider joining BCG in Europe first and aiming for a transfer to the US later, which is a common and proven route.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare your application files, for your upcoming BCG pre-interview assessment and/or interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen
