Information to Current Economy

What is a good source to get information on the current economic state to prepare for interviews?

For my interviews at MBB, it was stated, I need to know what currently is happening in the economy. I usually get this information from the classical newspapers, such as the financial times and the Journal, but currently, I am working, studying, and preparing for interviews, so I don't have time to read the newspapers every day. And I also feel like looking at the headlines is usually way too specific, as I mainly need to be up-to-date on big-picture stuff. What news sources can you recommend, which look at the economy in more of a big-picture setting?

Hello A,

I will include some available sources of information that you can choose from based on your preferences.

I believe that putting them all together might help other people as well.

There are several news sources that can provide you with big-picture insights on the current economic state without requiring extensive time investment. Here are a few recommendations:

  • The Economist
  • Bloomberg
  • World Economic Forum (WEF)
  • CNBC
  • BBC Business
  • Financial Times (FT) Briefings: The FT offers a series of briefings on various economic topics, providing concise overviews and analysis to keep you up to date with key developments.
  • Reputable think tanks, central banks, and international organizations like the World Bank and IMF.
  • Consulting research reports and newsletters (+ podcasts if you like them; for me, they work out great because I can listen to them while I do something else).

By regularly reviewing these sources and staying informed, you can develop a solid understanding of the big-picture economic landscape, which will benefit your interviews. As other people mentioned, you can go over headlines, briefings, and summaries and deep dive only into the ones you feel like you need more info about. In my opinion, you don't need more than 10'-20' per day, you just need to be consistent.

Good luck with everything!

Hello,

Key question here - which region are you recruiting in? Make sure to read economic content that is specific to your region too!

I highly recommend newsletters, which are often short, easy to read, and summarize important information in a clear and engaging manner. If you are based in the US, Axios Macro, Axios Markets, and Robinhood Snacks are some of my favorites. FT, WSJ, and Bloomberg also all have newsletters too.

Hi there,

Most of the major outlets like the Financial Times offer free newsletters that you can subscribe to and which contain a sort of weekly digest of the economy.

An alternative might be to subscribe to The Economist for a month and read the weekly magazine. It’s actually an engaging read that goes beyond the economy and into other things, such as culture.

Best,

Cristian

Hey,

In my experience, it's not so much about being on top of everything that is going on but rather help you be more creative and business-sense driven when you solve a case.

I don't know from what geography you are from so I can't recommend anything specifically but this would be my advice:

- have a daily look at the news (focus on 1 or 2 providers, ideally business oriented, but nothing too ‘niche') to get familiar with the main headlines

- choose maybe 1 article per day  which you read in detail (you can read while commuting or before going to sleep for example). When I was preparing, doing that really helped me be more creative in my case solving as I would use examples I'd read in the press (eg., revenue levers, cost levers).

Hope this helps!

Hi there,

I skim the financial times (just the headlines). It takes 2-3 minutes/day. 25% of headlines are relevant…that's great!

I also subscribe to Robinhood Snacks.

Finally, I like both the FT and The Economist podcasts.
