Imbellus Test

I was invited to a 30 minute assessment interview via phone with McKinsey for an analyst role as an experienced hire, and was provided links to prepare for the traditional case studies. I've read that many people are required to take the Imbellus test, but the recruiter has not made any mention of this. Should I be prepared to take this exam, even if it has not been mentioned ahead of time/ no mention of needing a computer has been made?

Thanks for any input you can provide!

Hi Mike,

Q: Should I be prepared to take this exam, even if it has not been mentioned ahead of time

If they just mentioned case interviews as next step, then you don’t need to prepare for the Imbellus, at least at this stage. For experienced hires it is not always required.

If for whatever reason you will need to prepare in the future, you can find an article on the game below with a few tips:

If you want to prepare further, you can find below a video simulation with:

  • 15 videos showing how to crack the Ecosystem Game in 23 minutes (instead of the recommended 35) and resist 25+ turns in the Plant Defense (instead of the minimum target of 15)
  • Automated Excel with Formulas to build a food chain in the Ecosystem game in 16 minutes
  • PDF guide with all the 5 games and how to crack each of them

You can check the video simulation at the following link - full disclosure, I am the author ;)

In case you have any other questions on the game please feel free to PM me, happy to help.

Hi there,

Based on your description, it's likely you don't need to take it. In some regions and for some roles, they can skip it.

However, it's best to ask HR directly in the office that you are targeting. They will be able to give you the most reliable answer possible so you can then properly plan for your preparation.

Best,

Cristian

Hello Mike,

the Imbellus Test is becoming common practice across McKinsey offices. However, I would focus on the phone interview first. Even if you will be asked to do the Imbellus Test, there is no real way to prepare for it and you will be able to get acquainted with the test when you will log in

Hope useful,

Federica

Hello,

Given that they've already invited you to interview, it seems likely that you won't have to take the Imbellus. However, I recommend reaching out to the recruiting team to check this for sure.

Hello Mike,

That is indeed odd, and it makes a lot of sense for you to check with the recruiter the same way you did here. THey are there to hlep exactly with these type of questions.

Cheers,

Clara
