IB interview dress code

Hi

I know this might sound like a silly question, but I really believe that how you present yourself in an interview makes a big difference — and that includes how you dress. I'm preparing for an investment banking interview (in Milan, but I guess this applies more or less everywhere), and I’d love to hear your advice on what to wear to make a solid first impression.

Would you go for a navy blue or charcoal grey suit? Solid-colored tie or something with a very subtle pattern? And for shoes, I’m thinking classic formal ones.

Also — do you think a business backpack is fine, or is a briefcase more appropriate? Or should I just skip bringing anything (like a laptop) and go in with just the suit to keep it light and simple?

Thanks a lot in advance, I think this could be useful for many of us in the same position!

Hi,

Navy blue/grey - both colors are fine. For ties - pattern or not wont make a difference imo, they are acceptable enough as long as it not too 'loud'

In terms of briefcase vs backpack, in the past the advice used to be briefcase for more formality, but nowadays with Tumi the backpack culture is alot more prevalent. I would say if you don't need to bring anything much, just a clean classy leather folder would work.

Hey there,

Good on you for wanting to make a solid impression!

On the suit: Both colours are great professional choices, so I don't think you'd really go wrong with either. If you really want to optimize your decision, pick the one that augments your skin tone

On the backpack / briefcase: Given that you are for optimizing optics, I think a briefcase would do that more than backpack, but formal backpacks won't necessarily be "frowned upon"

I'm not sure I'd go with a laptop (as in I definitely wouldn't put it on the table for the interview). You want to make sure you are present and that the interviewer also feels like you're present. We also don't want to over complicate things :-)

And just remember, at the end of it all, the interviewer will remember what you said more than how you look!

All the best!

Either colour is fine, and solid vs. a lightly patterned tie doesn’t make a difference either.

Nowadays a business backpack is normal to see.

Best of luck.

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the invitation!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your questions:

  • First of all, the dress code in investment banking is almost always "business formal", consisting of a dark suit, light shirt, dark tie, and classic shoes. Whether your tie is plain or has a subtle pattern does not matter, as long as you stay within these parameters.
  • Moreover, many interns and new hires wear backpacks. If you want to avoid the "newbie" vibe, I would advise you to use a briefcase or not bring a bag if you don't need to carry anything.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Either navy blue or charcoal grey is perfect - timeless, sharp, and conservative. You should avoid black or lighter shades.

hi!!!

not a silly question at all! for IB interviews, both navy and charcoal are great—go with whichever suits your tone best (navy is slightly more modern, charcoal more classic). pair it with a solid or subtly patterned tie, nothing flashy. polished black or dark brown oxfords are ideal. as for the bag, a sleek leather briefcase or very minimal backpack is totally fine—just keep it tidy and professional. and yep, no need to bring a laptop unless you were told to. confidence and neatness make the biggest impression!

best, Alessa 😊

Hi there,

It's good that you're taking this into account.

Actually, a simple suit and tie that doesn't draw too much attention is all you need.

Navy or dark grey matters less. I would go for a patternelss tie ideally. Classic shoes. No need to bring a backpack or a bag because you won't need anything, but if you were to bring one, it won't reflect on you for the purposes of the interview.

Best of luck!

My suggestions for IB, not for Consulting (but fine for consulting as well)

1. Both colors are acceptable, but navy blue is the best option

2. No patterns or very subtle) are fine. Go for classic colors. Tones of red or blue. Red for confidence. Blue for trust. Just make sure it is not Navy Blue ;)

3. Classic, formal, BLACK shoes. And a matching black belt. Buttoned

4. Double cuff White shirt. Cufflinks!!!

5. Briefcase more appropriate. If you are under 30, the backpack is fine. Just as long as it is not (too) informal. No need to take a briefcase. And you don't need a laptop, don't bring unnecessary weight.

Of course, you can even skip the backpack, but I wouldn't go with empty hands, though... at least bring a (professional) folder and a nice pen.
