How Can I Choose the Right BCG Platinion IT or Cybersecurity Cases Coach?

As you rightly point out, dedicated tech coaches are rarer on PrepLounge and similar platforms, so you are trading off a longer search for a specialist against what a strong generalist coach can give you now.

The way I would think about it: the deep technical content is something you likely know better than most coaches already, but where a generalist coach adds real value is everything around it: the structuring, the fit and Q&A, communicating your thinking clearly, and running a couple of IT or tech-flavoured cases to get you comfortable with the format.

So if you are looking for a coach for the technical depth, you need a specialist profile. If it is structure, delivery and fit, a good senior generalist with a BCG background and a couple of techy past cases or projects can help you just as well.

I completely agree that it’s quite tough to find adequate tech-focused cases and coaches.

This is actually the exact type of preparation I support. I successfully recruited for PwC’s Tech practice, worked closely with BCG Platinion and on tech-based projects during my time at BCG, and have helped numerous candidates prepare for Tech/IT-based interviews by leveraging my tech background.

When choosing a coach, make sure they can do more than run standard business cases with a technology theme. They should be able to test your technical judgment while also assessing the core consulting skills: structuring, case leadership, communication, synthesis, and fit.

Your own cybersecurity knowledge will likely already be stronger than that of most generalist coaches. The coach’s value should therefore be in helping you communicate that knowledge clearly, apply it within a structured case, and perform effectively under interview pressure.

Given the specific fit with my background, I’d recommend a targeted coaching session. We can run a Platinion-style technology or cybersecurity case and identify exactly what you need to improve before the first round.

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

• First of all, I would advise you to not over-index on finding a pure cybersecurity coach, since BCG Platinion cases are not deep technical exams, but they are business problems with a technology setting. The technical depth is checked separately, and for that part your own work experience is the best preparation, not a coach.
• Moreover, when you look at coaches, I would advise you to check for the following aspects: whether they have actually interviewed a lot of candidates (i.e. they worked in consulting for more than only a few years) and whether they have coached for several years (i.e. they are good teachers, not just good consultants). A strong generalist coach who knows BCG well will help you more than someone who only knows cybersecurity but has never sat on the interviewer side.

I doubt you will find a Platinion guy on platforms like these.

But senior enough coaches/interviewers (who have had experience with Tech/Digital projects) will be able to

1. Help you with the business aspect of things (structuring, business judgment etc)
2. Know enough also to call you out on a weak response

I have coached candidates for Platinion before and conduct some of their business-related onboarding training. I am not a technical expert on cybersecurity but can give a very good overview of the interview process and the technical depth that is required. 

As pointed out by other coaches, however, preparing only for the technical knowledge is only part of the job. As this is still BCG, you need to prepare for structuring, communication and personal fit as well.

for a BCG Platinion cybersecurity interview, I’d definitely look for someone with hands on experience in IT, cybersecurity, or digital transformation rather than a generalist case coach. The case itself can still test classic structuring and problem solving, but you’ll benefit a lot from someone who understands the technical context and can challenge you on topics like cybersecurity strategy, IT architecture, risk, and transformation.

I’d also make sure your preparation covers both the technical case and the usual fit questions, especially why Platinion and why cybersecurity. If you share your background and the exact role, I’d be happy to point you towards the right type of coach.
