I think I bombed the Hirequotient test

BCG's online test typically works as a gate. There is a threshold you need to clear on the test itself, and clearing it is largely what determines whether you move to interviews, so it does carry real weight on its own.

How much your resume and referral can help depends on how close you were to that threshold. If you landed just under or around it, a strong profile and a genuine referral can tip a borderline case in your favour, since referred applications tend to get a closer human look. If you were well below the bar, they are much less likely to override the result.

Two easy questions wrong and a cut-off recommendation do not by themselves put you in the second group, so I would not assume the worst for the moment.

Hi,

The BCG Chatbot test has strict filters (even though the bar is not too high), and rushing easy questions plus not finishing the recommendation can surely hurt your score.

Your resume and referral won’t compensate for a weak test performance. This step is designed to screen candidates independently.

Having said that, wait for the result before drawing conclusions.

First of all, congratulations on the progress in the application process with BCG thus far!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your situation:

• First of all, contrary to what other coaches have said, failing two out of normally 8-9 questions, on top of not finishing to summarize the case study in the one-minute video recording, is certainly not great - but unfortuantely, no one can tell for certain until you receive the result.
• Moreover, contrary to what other coaches have said, the BCG Casey pre-interview assessment seems to have a hard threshold, so not meeting the threshold will eliminate you from the application process, no matter how strong your application files and/or a referral may be.
• Lastly, however, do not spiral over something you cannot change now. I would advise you to keep preparing for the case interviews as if you passed, and see about the result. In the meantime, please also apply to other consulting firms.

If you got to the HireQuotient stage and submitted the test, you’re still in the running. HQ isn’t a perfect filter and BCG knows that candidates often rush or get cut off. A few wrong questions or a clipped recommendation don’t automatically end the process. What matters is whether your overall profile clears the bar: GPA, school, referral, experience, and the rest of your application. Plenty of candidates who feel they “bombed” HQ still get interviews.

Treat the next steps as open. Don’t assume rejection just because the test felt rough :)

Getting a few questions wrong or getting cut off during the final recommendation does not automatically mean you are out.

The HireQuotient test is evaluated holistically across structuring, numerical reasoning, and business synthesis, not on a strict perfection bar. Many candidates make mistakes on 1 to 2 questions or run out of time on the 1-minute video pitch and still get invited to Round 1.

While your resume and referral help get you invited to take the test, the test score itself acts as a hard filter alongside your application. If your score clears BCG's threshold for the cohort, your referral and resume carry you through to the interview stage.

For now, stop dwelling on what happened. Focus entirely on preparing for live case interviews so you are ready when the invite comes through.
