Consulting Consulting
Back to overview

I have an upcoming interview for the Data Science Consultant role at Simon-Kucher, and I’m looking for some insight into the interview process.

For context, I recently finished my MS in Business Analytics and have prior consulting experience focused on pharma commercial analytics.

Since this role sits at the intersection of commercial strategy and Data Science, I’m trying to calibrate my prep. Specifically, I’d love to know:

  1. Case Mix: What is the balance between traditional pricing/market entry cases versus technical architecture or ML-focused case questions?
  2. General Experience: How do SKP (or similar firms) test technical depth versus commercial translation?

Any advice, past experiences, or suggestions on how to best structure my practice this week would be hugely appreciated. Thank you!

Hi there,

These are exactly the right questions, but the honest answer is that nobody outside the recruiting team can reliably tell you the precise mix for this specific role. It can vary by role, office, and interviewer, so ask the recruiter whether the process includes live coding, a technical case, a traditional business case, or some combination.

My understanding is that you should be ready for both technical depth and commercial translation. They may test your models, algorithms, architecture choices, and past projects, but they will also want to see whether you can turn technical analysis into a clear business recommendation.

In terms of the fit interview, nothing here really changes!

With one week, I would prepare in three lanes:

1. Technical depth. Be ready to explain a project end to end, including the problem, data, method, model choice, tradeoffs, validation, and limitations.

2. Commercial translation. Practice turning technical findings into pricing, growth, market entry, or pharma commercialization recommendations.

3. Case and fit. Practice structuring ambiguous problems, doing the maths, synthesizing clearly, and telling strong impact stories.

Do not try to predict one exact case mix. Be ready for anything.

For the general case and fit side, my Full Interview Mastery course will help you build the core interview skills systematically.

Hi,

Have coached some people who have interviewed for BCG Gamma roles - so sharing some tips:

  1. If this is a client facing role, expect that they will test some aspects of your technical knowledge in the context of a case question/business problem
  2. The case interview normally for roles like this are not as structured or strict in terms of the format versus the generalist one, and your answer in the core consultant skills often isnt expected to be on the same level as a generalist consultant (i.e. you need structure, not perfect structure)
  3. My coachees have faced standalone technical questions as well to test your topical knowledge in models/algorithms etc
  4. Also be prepared to speak about previous experiences that can showcase both technical expertise AND client facing impact

All the best!

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the invitation from Simon-Kucher!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your questions:

  • Contrary to what other coaches have said, no one can provide a serious answer regarding the specific case mix and ways to assess your technical and commercial skills except for the recruiter and/or new consultants. Thus, I would strongly advise you to immediately reach out to both parties and inquire about these aspects.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming Simon-Kucher interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

These are great question, and exactly what you should be looking into in order to tailor your prep accordingly.

But my strong recommendation is that you direct these questions to the recruiter. The process can differ sometimes between offices and roles, so it makes sense to get as much relevant information directly from the source. Some recruiters can also share some practice materials.

Once you have a clearer understanding of what to expect, then you can come back here and you might get more useful advice on how to prepare.

Best,
Cristian

hey there :)

Given your pharma commercial analytics background, you already have a very relevant profile. I’d expect the case to lean more towards commercial strategy and pricing, with data science used as a tool to solve the business problem rather than a pure ML or architecture interview.

I’d therefore focus your prep on pricing, market entry, segmentation, profitability and commercial strategy, while being ready to explain technical concepts clearly to a non technical client. The key is showing that you can translate data and models into actionable business recommendations.

For this week, I’d prioritize live cases and practise explaining your analytical approach in a simple, commercially relevant way.

Good luck, and feel free to reach out if you want to practise. Best, Alessa :)
