How long does it typically take to hear back after McKinsey Solve and what does the process look like for an Associate role?

I graduated with my MBA (T25 program) this summer but didn’t recruit for MBB in Fall of 2024 because I just didn’t feel ready at the time. However, I am applying now and was invited to take McKinsey Solve and was surprised to do well with a score of 544 and a decile of 10. I am wondering how long it typically takes to hear back after doing Solve, and whether I have any real shot. I come from a non-traditional background (mostly teaching and behavioral health), and my only experience with consulting is a little over year of public sector consulting through my internship and other engagements at school.

I’m also curious as to what the interview process and timeline looks like. I applied early October 2025, so would I be considered for Fall 2026 openings? Or are there earlier cohorts I could join?

Hi there,

You typically hear back within two weeks after Solve. In this time, they will have reviewed your full application (CV + CL), your referral (if applicable) and your Solve score.

Then you normally have two rounds with two interviews each. Within each interivew you have a PEI component and a case component. Between the rounds, there are typically 2-3 weeks, but they are flexible in most cases about when they schedule them.

If you recruit in October-November now, indeed you will lively have next summer as a starting date. But it's best to check directly with the recruiter for these things since they are always the ones who set these timelines and are in best position to confirm them.

If you're in the application process now, you might find this guide useful:

Hey there, congrats on your Solve score, that’s a really strong start. Usually, after McKinsey Solve, you can expect to hear back within a few weeks if they’re moving you forward. With your score and MBA background, you definitely have a shot, even with a non-traditional path, your public sector consulting experience counts.

For the Associate role, the next step would be standard problem-solving interviews (cases) and PEI interviews. Since you applied in early October 2025, you’d likely be considered for Fall 2026 start, though sometimes strong candidates can join earlier if there are openings. The process typically takes a few months from Solve to final offer, depending on scheduling and office timelines. best, Alessa :)

On timing, McKinsey typically takes two to four weeks after Solve, but it varies by office and cycle. Applying in October 2025 puts you in an awkward spot. Most MBA associate hiring happens in fall recruiting. You are likely looking at spring or fall 2026 cohorts.

The reality is your background will raise questions. Teaching and behavioral health are non-traditional, and a year of public sector consulting through an internship is thin for an Associate role. Solve gets you past one gate but the resume still has to clear another.

Your background actually has transferable angles. Structured problem solving, managing difficult stakeholders, driving behavior change. But you need to translate that into consulting language yourself. Reviewers will not do it for you.

If you get interviews, the Associate bar is higher than Analyst. Sharper structure, faster synthesis, more polished communication. Start preparing now, do not wait to hear back.

Email the recruiter directly and ask which cohorts are still open. That is a normal question and will save you weeks of uncertainty.
