Goal Setting & Promotion

Hi everyone, I hope some kind soul can give some direction.

So recently I have a new performance manager (PM) as I entered a new role (Big4). With the firm for three years been promoted twice. The next promotion is tough as I know of people who didn’t get promoted.

My PM is new to the firm and he admits he doesn’t know much about the promotion criteria. I’m certainly in no better position as I am a junior staff. Nevertheless I listed down getting promoted and he asked to remove as he said along the lines of getting promotion not tied to your goal setting. He said he would need to check in with the Director.

As such I am not sure if I should be worried. It will be about a good 9 months before promotion discussion come about. However I have to start early. Since I’m also in a new role I wouldnt want to be penalized and said I wasn’t promoted cause I’m too inexperienced etc.

Any tips?

Hi there,

It sounds like what he is saying is that your goal can't be “getting promoted”

Goals need to be about the skills you have to build. If you build the skills necessary for the job, the natural result is promotion.

Hello,

Your phrasing is a bit confusing here - are you asking whether you should be discussing potential promotion with your PM/director?

I think that if you are interested in the promotion down the line, it is definitely worth raising this with your PM, and making sure you know what you need to do and what is expected of you to get the promotion. Getting promoted may not be a performance goal in and of itself, but the competencies you need to demonstrate would be.
