Follow-Up Note After McK Interview

Hello,

I am wondering if it is expected of candidates to send follow-up messages to McK interviewers after an interview? I realize it probably won't hurt, but was not sure this is best practice.

Also, since I do not have the interviewers' email, I am thinking of sending a message by connecting on LinkedIn.

Please let me know if this might come off weirdly, thanks!!

Hi there,

No, it’s not expected to send follow-up notes after McKinsey interviews — and not doing so won’t impact your chances. The process is very structured, and decisions are based solely on interview performance.

If you do want to send a thank-you, the best approach is via your recruiter — they can forward it on your behalf. I’d avoid reaching out on LinkedIn unless you had a particularly strong personal connection, as it can feel out of place in this context.

Hope that helps, and best of luck!

Best,
Evelina

hello!

it’s not expected at McKinsey, but a short, polite thank-you note can leave a nice impression if done well. if you don’t have their email, I’d skip LinkedIn unless the vibe was very open—some interviewers prefer to keep LinkedIn separate. so don’t worry if you don’t follow up, totally normal. focus on the next round!

best, Alessa 😊

As another coach has mentioned, it’s not expected and will not influence your chances in any way.

Hi there,

If you don't have the contact, I wouldn't add them on linkedin and message them. It reads as trying to hard and it won't help in any way.

Following up with a message is not even necessary, especially because I assume you've already thanked them at the end of the meeting.

Best,
Cristian

Hi there,

It’s not expected — but it is appreciated.

People forget that even in consulting, we’re still dealing with humans. A simple “thank you” goes a long way, especially when someone’s spent time with you. It won’t get you the job, but it might get you remembered.

Best,

Alberto

Hi,

Not expected, and frankly does not matter. No thank you note has changed/swayed mine (or my peer interviewers') decision.

If you want to send one, keep it short and sweet :)

And hopefully the firm gets back to you soon, if not you can check out my article: What happens if you don't hear back from your interview

All the best!
