Step 1 - Categorize the main stories

There are 5-10 "themes" you need to prepare for. i.e. Leadership, teamwork, challenge, etc. Figure out this list and make sure your stories cover this range (PM me and I can provide you with a template for this list)

Step 2 - Create FLEXIBLE stories that cover a range of categories

You need to create 4-6 stories that each cover a range of topics. They need to be powerful stories that can be adjusted and adapted based on the question asked.

One of my "core" or "killer" stories was usable for Initiative, Achievement, Leadership, Challenge, Change of direction, AND Persuasion.

Write down these stories along STAR or similar format...use bullet points

Step 3 - Organize these stories so you know which ones can be used for what and PRACTICE

Make sure you cover the whole gambit. Then, practice getting asked a question and thinking of which stories apply. I can assure you, no-one is coming up with full stories in a few seconds. Rather, they have practiced how to adapt an existing story to the question asked.

This can indeed sound like a tough question, but IMO is fairly similar in many ways to questions on leadership. 

As a fresh graduate, you also would have not taken up a formal leadership position in your internships, yet these questions are often asked to candidates. Consulting firms know and understand this. They expect then, that you would have taken up leadership roles outside of ‘work’ → at school, sports, volunteering etc.

Mentorship focuses on the individual, while Leadership implies a position/role of authority (typically) to achieve a stated group/organization's goals. They are different, but often go hand-in-hand.

So a couple of practical tips (assuming you do have solid leadership experience)

1. Think through all of your leadership experiences
2. Pick one experience that involved a high amount of engagement with a specific team member and/or one where you helped a specific team member/person grow and develop
   • E.g. perhaps you were a Captain of a sports team, and had to groom/transfer your experience to the in-coming Captain or your successor
3. Structure your answer accordingly, based on your preferred fit story structure

This is a really cool question!

Even though you are the start of your career, you surely mentored people before. You just have to reconsider what you understand through mentorship.

Some examples from your past you could resort to:

1. Helping a colleague in university with a subject they were struggling with but you were better at
2. Helping a sibling or a friend overcome a difficult time
3. Helping a new joiner in the internship program navigate the firm. 

Ideally come up with 1-3 examples under each of the three topics above and then figure out which one would be the strongest.
