First Consulting Interview: Roland Berger (Germany)

Hey Guys,

i got an invitation for the interview day at Roland  Berger for an internship. This will be my first consulting interview ever and I dont know how i should attack this. My Background is finance and I wanted to ask if anyone here has experience with Roland Berger and can help me out.

I just discovered preplounge but other than that I am completely unfamiliar with the consulting space.

Thank you very much

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the invitation from Roland Berger!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your situation:

  • Given the (presumedly) rather short time until your interview day with Roland Berger and your current level of readiness, I would highly advise you to consider working with an experienced coach like me who knows Roland Berger well, to gain the required quality and acceleration for your interview preparation.

You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

Congratulations!

I'm certainly very happy to help you out with prepping for this interview, both fit and casing. I know exactly what it feels like to be in this position as a beginner too. Feel free to reach out!

Hi there,

Congrats on the interview invite!

Key steps for you are:

  1. Familiarize your self with the mechanics of a typical interview - fit & case
  2. Practice 1/2 initial interviews with a coach / current consultant for key areas of development
  3. Develop action plan based on identified areas and other key areas interviewees need to enhance
  4. Iteratively practice and refine your prep plan with coach

Major point to note is that the quality of practice is a lot more important than just practicing cases. Also, I’d suggest you don’t get stuck on step 1 reading cases solo and just do actual mock interviews.

Feel free to reach out for an intro chat if you need more clarity or coaching support.

Hi there,

Congrats!

Here's a rough outline:

First, you need a strong baseline and understand how consulting interviews work, what is evaluated, what skills you need to develop, how to best approach cases and the individual parts, how to practice properly, etc. I have a book out called The 1%: Conquer Your Consulting Case Interview, which you can find on Amazon which clears up all these areas.

Then, you need to practice with high-quality materials and case partners.

The main reason why candidates don't get better is because they never do the first step. Instead, they just do more cases, repeating the same mistakes and ill-informed habits over and over again.

Alternatively consider 1-2 coaching sessions to get you on track.

Please reach out if you need help!

Cheers,
Florian
