Finding Pro-Bono Consulting Opportunities for International Volunteers

Hi Community!

I'm looking for a pro-bono consulting gig, but am having trouble finding an consulting organization that is both: 1. International 2. Actively operating .

The reason I'm looking for an an international opportunity is because I'm based in Malaysia, and it seems like most of the pro-bono consulting organizations are reserved mainly for those living in the US/UK/Canada - and therefore inaccessible for me.

Does anyone have suggestions on any active pro-bono consulting organizations that would accept an international (or a Malaysian) volunteer? I would love to connect with them.

Just trying to get some real-life consulting experience here. Any guidance is appreciated!

Hey there!

It is definitely true that platforms like Catchafire or Taproot are heavily skewed toward the US and UK, which can be frustrating when you are based elsewhere.

Two pieces of my advice from my end based on how you set your objective and constraint:

1. I would check out MovingWorlds, which is specifically built for global experteering. They connect professionals with social enterprises all over the world (not just US and UK), and many of their projects are fully remote or actively looking for international talent.

2. I would contact student orgs like 180 Degrees Consulting. 180DC is a mostly student-led consulting organization, and they operate heavily in the APAC region. They are often tied to universities, you should check if there is an active branch in Malaysia you can tap into, or reach out to their regional leadership.

Another suggestion beyond what you mention: honestly, the most effective way to get pro-bono experience is to bypass the platforms entirely. Find a local Malaysian NGO, charity, or even a growing tech startup. Reach out directly to the founders on LinkedIn. The conversion rate is not super-high, but many organizations will accept free, structured, and professional help.

Hope this helps, and good luck with the search!

Best,
Tom

Hi Brindha,

There are definitely still good international pro-bono opportunities out there — they’re just a bit fragmented and often less advertised outside the US/UK.

A few places I’d look into:

  • 180 Degrees Consulting — probably the biggest global student/non-profit consulting organization and active across many countries, including Asia
  • Net Impact — sometimes offers strategy/social impact projects through local chapters
  • MovingWorlds — connects professionals with impact-focused consulting projects remotely
  • Local startup incubators / NGOs in Malaysia — honestly, this is often the most practical route and can lead to stronger hands-on experience than formal “pro-bono consulting programs”

Another point: don’t limit yourself too much to branded pro-bono organizations. Consulting firms care more about:

  • Problem-solving experience
  • Ownership
  • Stakeholder interaction
  • Tangible impact

So even helping a startup, NGO, student organization, or small business with growth, operations, or strategy can be very valuable if framed well on your CV.

Given you’re in Malaysia, remote and startup-related opportunities may actually be the highest ROI path.

Most established pro-bono consulting orgs are based in the US, UK, or Canada, which makes them tough to access from Malaysia.

There are a few global networks that accept international volunteers, the biggest student and young professional consulting NGO has an Asia-Pacific presence and runs remote projects. There are also some volunteer-matching platforms with location-flexible projects, and Asia-focused networks that connect consultants with social enterprises across the region.

But honestly, the better path is to just build your own pro-bono gig directly. It's faster and you have more control.

What works really well is approaching local Malaysian nonprofits, social enterprises, or small businesses yourself. Offer them 4 to 6 weeks of free strategy help on one specific problem. Most will say yes, you'd be surprised how open they are when someone offers real help.

Malaysian accelerators are another good route. Their portfolio companies often need strategic help and don't have budget, so a free consultant is a win for them.

The CV bullet is also stronger this way because you sourced and delivered it yourself. Frame it with a clear outcome, "Pro bono strategy consultant for [client]. Delivered [specific result]."

Good luck.

hey Brindha!

Most pro‑bono consulting groups are US/UK‑centric, but there are international ones that accept remote volunteers. The ones that usually take people from anywhere are things like Consult for Humanity, UNV assignments, and Poverty_Fighters. They run global, fully remote projects and don’t care where you live as long as you can commit time. Another option is 180_Degrees_Consulting global branches that allow remote project teams. Some smaller NGOs also take volunteers directly if you pitch yourself as someone who can help with strategy, operations, or research.

If none of these fit, you can create your own experience by reaching out to local NGOs or social enterprises in Malaysia and offering to help with a specific problem. One small project with clear impact is often stronger than a big brand name.
