Fields of focus?

My aim is to increase my chances to get into MBB (most preferably McKinsey).

I feel like my résumé is rather boring, though. So I was wondering if a focus on a specific field (e.g. digitalization) could make me stand out more? I could do some workshops or seminars in that area to gain additional knowledge.

What do you guys think?

Hi Anonymous,

although some additional specialization will not hurt, given that your goal is to increase the chances to get into MBB, the ideal points you may want to focus on are those that will maximize your chances to get an interview. I will report below an extract of a previous post I wrote, listing the main ones:

  1. University reputation
  2. Degree
  3. Academic performance
  4. Work experience
  5. Extracurricular activities
  6. Experience abroad

Given that you cannot change your school reputation, you may work on the remaining points, that is:

  • Degree: try to specialize in math/quant subjects
  • Academic performance: maximize your GPA
  • Work experience: find internships in business/strategy related fields, if possible with big brands
  • Extracurricular activities: start activities in your universities, in particular in clubs related to consulting or activities that would involve interaction with C-levels (eg conferences organization with relevant guests and/or fundraising)
  • Experience abroad: take part in an exchange programme

A final push may be given by a good referral in your desired firm, either coming from Alumni or from networking during consulting events.

Hope this helps,
