Entry level at McKinsey with DMD + MSc in Clinical Drug Development?

Hi everyone,
I have a medical background — I graduated as a Doctor of Stomatology (DMD) from Volgograd State Medical University in Russia. Currently, I’m finishing my MSc in Clinical Drug Development at University College London, and I will receive my degree in November.

I’m now planning to apply to McKinsey and I’m wondering which entry level position I should target. With this profile, would I be considered for a Business Analyst role, or do I have a chance to start as an Associate?

Thanks a lot for your advice!

Hey Anisa :)

With your DMD plus a UCL MSc, you are very much on the border between Business Analyst and Associate. McKinsey usually hires Associates if you have a PhD, an MD, or another advanced professional degree. A DMD is typically considered equivalent to an MD or DDS, so that already qualifies you for Associate track. The MSc adds further weight, though by itself it wouldn’t be decisive.

So in practice, you should be targeting Associate, not Business Analyst. If HR sees your profile differently, they will downshift you, but it’s better to apply at the higher entry point.

best,
Alessa :)

Hi there,

To be considered as Associate, usually you'd need to have an MBA or PhD. Given you would get your MSc, it is more likely they would consider you as BA. However, if you do well in the interviews, it is possible to negotiate the tenure of BA, e.g., instead of joining as a complete fresh BA with 0 tenure, join with 12 (or 18) months tenure to start as a 2nd year BA.

Best,

Emily

Do you actually have work experience? If you do, you would most likely be an Associate. If you don't, there's a good chance they would consider you as a Business Analyst (possibly with experience).
