Doing a PHD during the educational leave at McKinsey

How long does it typically take to complete a PhD during educational leave, and does McKinsey have connections with universities or specific departments where one can pursue a PhD? How does the process work for obtaining a PhD position at a university (in Germany)?

Hi there,

Between 2.5 and 3 years which is significantly faster than usual
There are certain professors who are known to take on legions of consultants for their teams and then there are others who always work with 1-2 McKinsey's on leave.
There is also the possibility to find a professor to support you outside of the McKinsey network
McKinsey as a firm has no specific connections as far as I am aware, however, many of their Sr. ASc and EMs have since they themselves went through the leave program
I found it extremely easy to find a professor to support you due to a. the network I mentioned above + the network you have before McKinsey b. the reputation of McKinsey PhDs as they are great to work with and c. the fact that as a PhD you are supporting your professor in some way or form.
The actual application process differs for each university, however, is usually not an issue if you get your professors support and buy-in - it's a formality.

It depends on the region and office.

So for instance in Germany this is quite common. Consultants start as Fellow, they are in the firm for 2y, then they go and do a PhD for 2-3y and come back as Associates or Senior Associates.

They remain firm members during this time even though they don't do projects, keep the electronics and stuff and have access to the office.

But this really differs from office to office and you should investigate this directly with the office from your region.

There's no preferential treatment in terms of getting into specific programs. It's still you who needs to apply and handle the entire application process.
