I want to receive updates regarding this question via email.

Does anyone have a framework for approaching Economic Consulting Case studies specifically ?

It is my understanding they are very different from Management Consulting case studies (for which there are lots of resources). Any thoughts on where to begin in terms of preparation or finding good examples to review would be great

Hello!

Overall, careful with frameworks.

Don´t ban them either, since they have huge utility at the beggining, when you are starting.

however, they are only that, the starting point. The summary were you see some or most of the key topics that are going to build your skillset.

From then, and once your toolbox is ready, you start pulling tools to fix cases in a very tailored way

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

Thank you Clara! this really helped me with thinking a bit more about structure even though I know economic consulting interviews might be somewhat different than strategy consulting ones

Hi there,

I would have loved to have those resources as well when I interviewed in Econ Consulting ;)

Unfortunately, Econ Consulting is a lot more niche than Strategy Consulting so there is not that much material. PrepLounge is mainly focused on Strategy Consulting, but possibly other platforms may have now resources for that.

To prepare for interviews you will mainly need to brush up:

  • Microeconomics
  • Competition Law
  • Econometrics

Questions are firm-dependent, but as general examples, some questions you may get are:

  • How would you test in Stata for heteroskedasticity
  • Define OLS
  • This is an econometric model to test a possible cartel. Which do you think is the issue
  • What are the effects of a cartel

If you are specifically interested in this field and want to invest in education for it long term, the following is a very good master (I did it and can provide more info – PM if needed):

Hope this helps,

Francesco

Thank you so much for this ! Interestingly I have an offer to study at Barcelona GSE but will be studying the masters in Economics - I am certainly hoping to take some competition or industrial organisation modules in September!

Hi there,

Unfortunately this isn't quite the right platform for this :/ I think reddit, LinkedIn, and Google are your best bets to start.

Good luck!

I think my question is perhaps seems more specific than I intended when using the term 'framework'. I am really just looking for some thoughts on how to approach Econ consulting case studies in general but is this still not the correct platform to ask about this ?

The Roots and Effects of Inflation
Inflation is an economic phenomenon that almost all of us have experienced at some point – and not just at the grocery store. Simply put, inflation means that the prices of goods and services rise, and your money becomes less valuable. For example, if you can buy something for 10 euros today, you might be able to buy less of it in a few months with the same amount. 😅But how does inflation actually happen? It usually results from an imbalance between supply and demand. A common cause is demand-pull inflation: when the demand for goods and services exceeds the supply, companies can raise their prices because they know that customers are still willing to pay more.Another frequent cause is cost-push inflation. When companies face rising production costs – for example, due to higher wages or increased raw material prices – they often raise their prices to cover those additional expenses. How Do Central Banks Fight Inflation?Central banks try to control inflation through various monetary policy measures. One approach is to raise the interest rates. This means that loans become more expensive and fewer people can afford them, which reduces demand and may help stabilize prices. Another measure is to reduce the money supply, limiting the availability of money – this is also intended to help stabilize the price level. The Impact of Inflation on Consulting FirmsInflation presents a real challenge for the consulting industry, with both negative and positive impacts. On one hand, rising prices for raw materials, energy, and wages can increase production costs for companies, which may reduce demand for consulting services. During times of economic uncertainty, many companies want to cut back on their spending. On the other hand, there are also opportunities: In times of economic difficulty, companies often seek external help to adapt to changing market conditions. Consulting firms that offer smart solutions for cost reduction and efficiency improvement might see an increase in demand for their services. ConclusionTo sum up, inflation presents both challenges and opportunities for consultants. The extent to which inflation impacts the industry depends on many factors, including the type of inflation and the ability of consulting firms to respond flexibly to the situation. In times of uncertainty, it’s crucial for consulting firms to stay agile and provide the right strategies to help their clients navigate through turbulent times. 📊
