Do you need to pass ALL interviews?

Hi,

This may be a silly question. Let's say a candidate has gone through 5 interviews (2 in Round 1 and 3 in Round 2). For an experienced hire specialist role, will a candidate still stand a chance to get an offer if he only did well in say, 4 of the 5 interviews but had great industry experience?

Hey there,

I can't answer for all firms but for MBB, usually, you have to show

  • a consistently strong performance across all cases and fit questions (PEI for McKinsey)
  • an absence of grave mistakes and an absence of repetitive minor mistakes

To answer your question in short, yes - you should pass all interviews for the offer.

All the best,

Florian

Hi there,

Yes, you need to “pass” all interviews.

It's very easy to overcomplicate this, and I know you want clarity/answers, but you just won't get that no matter how hard you try.

Prepare extensively, show up on the day, perform to your best ability, then forget about it until they call/email you.

If you'd like to know what a good performance or candiate looks like, here's my “Sentence for an Optimal Candidate":

"Someone who can approach a complicated problem and think + communicate in a structured way in the right context+objective of the case, while being personable, adaptable, and coachable, so that, ultimately, the interviewer can see themselves working with this individual and putting them in front of a client."

This is hard to describe as there's some nuance into this.

Sometimes you pass all the interviews and don't get an offer, just because there are some really great candidates.

Sometimes you get a question mark in an interview, but there's agreement between interviewers to move you forward to the next round because you did well on the other case (of course this may be different across companies). If on the last round you get a question mark, you won't get an offer.

Please note that by “question mark” I don't mean failing an interview. I mean passing the interview but barely/not showing great “spikes” in your performance.

Generally speaking yes, you have to pass every single interview, as each interviewer has sufficient ‘veto power’ to not pass a candidate (at least in MBB).

Now what “passing” actually means is a different story. In many firms, the assessment scale is typically not binary (pass vs. not pass), but can have up to 5-6 grades. Passing doesn't mean that you have to always get top score, but rather meet the minimum bar in each interview.

Feel free to PM me, if you'd like to understand further.
