Do I apply for the BA role or Associate role at Mckinsey?

Hi,

so I got 3 years of consulting experience at a major tech consulting firm straight out of university. I also hold a masters in Management Analytics. Is it more appropriate for me to apply for the BA role or the Associate role? Is it easier to get one over the other? If I were to join as a BA with my experience, when do I expect to get promoted to an associate?

Hi there,

1) Is it more appropriate for me to apply for the BA role or the Associate role?

With your experience, I believe you can target an intermediate position as a Senior Analyst/Junior Associate (McKinsey levels). This will be equivalent to a BA with some seniority.

If you don’t see an option to apply as Junior Associate, I would apply as BA, then negotiate the seniority in case of an offer in case they don’t offer it automatically.

2) Is it easier to get one over the other?

I would rather apply for the lower role in your case if there are no Junior Associate openings and then negotiate if needed.

3) If I were to join as a BA with my experience, when do I expect to get promoted to associate?

If you join as Senior Analyst/Junior Associate, you should be able to move to Associate within 1-2 years.

Best,

Francesco

Hi,

Typically <5 years experience without MBA puts you in a role right below the post-MBA role.

As asked in previous threads - the case the interviewer gives you does not vary by rank, but the expectations do differ between roles (higher expectations for more senior roles).

If you join as an experienced hire, your promotion timeline will also depend on how much tenure they credit you with based on your previous experience.

My suggestion, having gone through the ranks and also having been a lateral hire - don't rush things. It's really not a race.

All the best!

Hi there!

It's indeed rather borderline. If your target office has a Junior Associate role, I'd rather go for that one.

Though I've also seen Masters graduates with less than two years of experience getting in as Associates.

Regardless, I'd reach out to the recruiter if I were you to discuss your profile with them. That's what they are there for, so they should be able to help you specifically for the office you are targeting.

Best,
Cristian

Hi!

3 years of experience would probably put you in the Junior Associate role. It doesn't really matter which role you apply though (you can even apply for manager if you want ;) ), they will decide what's the right role for you prior to beginning the process.

Your whole story told through the resume and cover letter is what really matters - I recommend to focus your efforts on that first. Happy to help if you need.

Hi there,

You would be either BA or Junior Associate (the “in between” of BA + Associate). Ultimately, networking as well as interview performance will drive this outcome!

You are considered an experienced analyst. Apply to the more junior role.

I think you'd be best positioned for Senior BA / Junior Associate, as others here have suggested. Promotion will depend on performance, but I would think somewhere around the 1-2 year mark.
