They are both consultants.

The Expert track ones work on project workstreams relevant to their expertise (e.g. Digital in this case)

The Generalists can be staffed on a variety of workstreams

In terms of career progression - both have similar style of positions but different naming conventions.

Happy to give you more details on a question-by-question basis over DM.

However, if by Digital practice you mean anything in BCG Digital Ventures, BCG Platinion, or BCG GAMMA - then thats a completely different story altogether. The above answer is for regular BCG only.

Hi there,

Quite simply the difference is in the work you do!

As a BCG Generalist you will be put on a wide range of projects and get wide exposure (some of which can still be Digital).

As part of the Digital practice however you'll be funneled into purely digital topics. The most common of these would be digital transformations (multi-year projects).

Generalists will work across different industries (which can include digital), while consultants in the digital practice will do all (or the vast majority) of their work on digital projects.
