Delivery consulting in Mckinsey digital

Hello everyone,

I wanted to get some clarity on McKinsey Digital – Senior Delivery Consultant roles. Specifically:

What are the common exit opportunities from this role?

Given that I already have 3+ years in strategy consulting and hold a Tier 1 MBA, would moving into McKinsey Digital at this point be a strong career step?

Are there any options for an internal switch from a delivery consultant role in Digital to the traditional management consulting track?

Would love to hear experiences or perspectives from people who have either been in this role or worked alongside colleagues in it.

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

I am not totally aware of the context at McKinsey. However, this looks like a more specialized role that usually has its own, separate progression path. That said, I believe there will be no clear path to the generalist McK pool at the beginning. Nonetheless, I have seen specialist profiles transitioning at a later stage (e.g., partner level) in case your particular expertise is in high-demand for strategy projects (and you secure the right client relationships).

Hey there :)

Delivery Consultant roles in McKinsey Digital are more execution-focused (driving implementation, digital transformation rollouts, agile at scale, etc.) than the classic strategy track. Exit opportunities tend to be in digital transformation leadership roles in corporates, tech firms, or scale-ups, rather than PE/strategy-heavy exits. An internal switch into the generalist track is possible but not automatic – you’d need to prove strong problem-solving and push for it early.

Given you already have 3+ years in strategy consulting plus a Tier-1 MBA, I’d only recommend it if you’re passionate about delivery/digital and see yourself building a career in that space. Otherwise, aiming for a generalist role (either directly or via referrals) might be the stronger long-term move.

best, Alessa :)
