Confusing messages from HR/McKinsey Middle East

Last week, I took the McKinsey “Solve” game as a first step to interview with them. I know I did great (I built the sustainable ecosystem correctly and in the plant defense game, I was able to last between 30-40+ turns/round instead of 15) so I was assuming to progress to the interview stage.

Yesterday, I received an email from the recruiting team informing me that they won't be moving forward with my application (generic rejection email) however, today, I received another email asking me for some additional information on my profile for the next steps in the application process.

I emailed HR to understand what's going on but still don't have a reply. Has anyone gone through a similar thing? Could it be possible that the 1st rejection email was a mistake (automated email) and I should keep preparing for the interview?

Appreciate inputs here.

Hi there,

This is unfortunate but not unheard of. Haven't heard of this particular scenario of mixed messages before but mixed messages in general aren't uncommon.

If both messages were automated then both could be wrong, not just the one you're pointing at. It doesn't matter which one came first. However, if your Solve performance was indeed very good, then you have every reason to stay positive!

You did the right thing by contacting HR and I would absolutely keep up the preparation - not least because you're learning valuable skills that serve you well outside any application process!

Hope they get back to you soon with good news! Fingers crossed!

HR will be able to help with your situation, just give it one week. If you don't hear back email them again or try calling.

Best,

Dear candidate, we won't know until they have clarified, but stay hopeful :) :). Either way if you enjoy consulting, then keep preparing and consider other firms, too. Also we all have our preferences, there is never just one firm that suits us. Fingers crossed for you and let's hope also they come back with positive news.

Hi there,

If you did this well on the Solve it seems like there was a mistake on their part and the application is still ongoing and you should move to the next round.

They will likely get back to you soon. However, if you want to know faster, always call HR and ask directly.

Fingers crossed!

Cheers,

Florian

Hi there,

This sounds like a system error. You need to be patient here. Follow-up after a week.

While I suspect you will move on to the next round, just remember that your application is reviewed holistically with the Imbellus test! So, if your profile doesn't quite fit, or they realize they don't need to fill the role, etc. you may still be turned away despite a great performance. I think you'll likely move on, but just understand that that can happen.

Good luck and fingers crossed for you!

Hi there,

One of the two emails is obviously a mistake, and it is more likely that it is the automated one, although that’s not for sure.

These things may happen even in MBB. I personally helped a candidate that got a rejection email, then got confirmation that he passed, moved to the next round and in the end got an offer.

In any case, I am sure HR will clarify soon. If you want to speed up things, it is totally fine if you call.

Good luck!

Francesco

Hello!

That is indeed very bizarre, and a mistake must have been made one way or the other.

I would follow up with HR, adn don´t loose hope!

Cheers,

Clara
