Choice of a phone for the job

Hi experts!
I am about to start a job at Bain as a generalist- consultant. One of the pleasant but tricky choices I have now is picking handset model with which I will work along with laptop (comes with no choice - standard Lenovo MBB model) and watch (I get separately myself based on the handset choice). Choice is between Samsung S21 Plus and Iphone Pro Max 13.

My main question is - for what reasons does a consultant use the phone? this would help me compare the two models according to a practical criteria

Thanks

Hello!

I used to use the phone almost as much as the PC: calls, reviewing docs whenever you could not use the PC, videoconferences… really, all the time functioning.

I would prioritize the one with the strongest battery tbh, although both are wonderful and will serve you well

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

Hello there!

That's a nice problem to deal with:)

You will mainly use you phone to:

  • Read (and answer) emails
  • Make calls
  • Manage you agenda

I would go for an iphone because it makes your life easier and quicker. Compared to Samsung it has less options to personalize your experience but you don't really need them for your working routine.

Best,
Luca

Whatever the differences between the phones in terms of what they can or cannot do - these will never be outweighed by you already being an Apple or Samsung person (presumably) from using your personal phone.

I see in my current company how much private iphone users struggle to use an allegedly superior Samsung model. It lost all its superiority the moment it was put in the hands of someone not used to using it.

In my personal opinion anyways it's iphone all the way! Used one at McKinsey and worked like a charm. But of course, McKinsey had its own custom app store and everything so no surprise there.

Hi there,

First of all, welcome to the firm!

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for quite a lot of users, so I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

  • Generally speaking, I would advise you to go with the smartphone you prefer and you might know the underlying operating system of best. Since you will use your smartphone very frequently, it might be slightly easier for you in the beginning. All other factors involving technical features tend to be subordninate since you will receive a new smartphone either way in case yours is not working properly anymore.
  • Still, for instance, I changed from Samsung to iPhone for work and never had any issues (though having a private iPhone now as well).
  • Lastly, you will most probably use your smartphone in so many different occasions like checking your e-mails, skimming through documents, calling clients aso.

In case you want a more detailed discussion on what to best prepare for your upcoming career entry with Bain, please feel free to contact me directly.

I hope this helps,

Hagen

Hi there,

Technically, Samsung makes far superior phones. That said, I have an iPhone. Why? Apple has done an amazing job with marketing/branding and ease of use.

I would probably recommend the iPhone as it'll be easiest to use in line with work - most other consultants use the iPhone.

Mostly you'll use your phone for calls, videoconferencing, document proofreading, and hotspotting.

Hi there, and congratulations first of all!

From personal experience, I would go with the iPhone 13 Max :) Chances are most people in your firm will be using iPhones as well, so there is some added convenience there in terms of a shared ecosystem.

As others have mentioned previously, you will use your phone a lot (especially now with the pandemic still ongoing and more remote work) for calls, but also to perhaps take notes, draft or send emails, read partner emails (think early in the morning in the cab, or late at night in your hotel room when you do not want to use your laptop).

So make sure you are comfortable with the device, the ecosystem, and the (screen) size.

Best

Stephan

If you can, iPhone is best. But its personal choice really at the end of the day :).

If they give you both options, it means that both options will do the job ;)

You should go with the one you feel more comfortable with.
