Can you always get an extension on an MBB/Big 4 interview?

I don't want to take on the opportunity cost preparing case interviews before being invited to an interview. I know it's unlikely to get an interview and there are other industries I'm exploring.

If I get an interview at MBB/Big 4 for an entry-level analyst position, will they always allow me to extend the date for one month to allow for adequate preparation time? Or will it be required to interview within 1-2 weeks?

Hi Daniel,

Of course, do what you want, but you'll honestly regret not preparing beforehand - it's well and truly a losing strategy.

You need to be about 80% ready before you apply, which should take you 1-2 months.

Now, it's important you realize that this is not just about the interview. Your preparation is going to build up all kinds of skills that pay dividends outside of the interview itself (in your professional life, in future interviews, and even in your personal life). I can't tell you how many candidates have remarked “wow, I didn't just learn how to case, I actually became so much better at my job”.

Approach this as building your critical thinking, problem-solving, business acumen, structured/clear communication etc. etc. skillsets!

Hi Daniel,

It depends on the company and country. Most companies are flexible, but whenever they recruit with specific deadlines you may not be able to reschedule.

If you are serious about consulting, it is definitely better to start to prepare before you get invitations. Most candidates need more than 1 month to prepare, so even if they give you an extension of 4 weeks it may not be enough.

No, you won't always be allowed to get an extension, particularly as an undergrad. And it can take more than 4 weeks to prepare.

Now be careful regarding Big4 as not all Big4 use case interviews.

Hi Daniel,

Wrong way to approach this..

If you are serious about Consulting, start the prep early. It wont hurt.

And dont assume companies will be flexible to allow 4 weeks as they work to certain recruitment timelines, interviewer availability and other logistics.

all the best.

Hi!

MBB are usually flexible in setting up your interview rounds. However, there might be some restrictions that will shorten your preparation time.

I'd recommend applying and immediately start your preparation. If you then need to boost your preparation there are lots of coaches here on PrepLounge that could help you achieve it within the right time frame.

Hi Daniel,

This is not the right way to approach this. Case interview prep is not something you can do in a matter of 2 weeks. It requires continuous intensive prep and a lot of momentum. When that interview comes - you don't want to be left shorthanded and scramble for preparation at the last moment.

When you prepare for case interviews - you also develop skills like structuring, effective communication, being organised, etc.

I recommend to prepare pre-emptively. One should start applications ideally when nearly ready as you want to be fully prepared when the interview comes.

Typically companies can be somewhat flexible in rescheduling interviews. However, don't expect a reschedule of more than 2-3 weeks - if at all. Don't rely on that approach.
