Can I apply to the same group in a different region, if I didn't end up well with the firm?

I previously worked in a Big Four firm and performed well. Didn't end up well with the firm as I was promoted to a new role, where I worked for 2 months, then suddenly quit to join another firm. My boss was quite mad at that time.

Currently, I am considering applying to their strategy arm in another continent. However, I'm a bit concerned that my ex-boss will give me bad comments if there's a reference check, given that Big Four cooperates quite closely between different regions and Partners may know each other. Is this something that I should be concerned and stopping me to apply for this role?

Thanks!

Hi!

I'm not a coach or really much qualified on anything. I'm trying to break into consulting, which is why i'm on this page. But from an external perspective and a reasonable person standard - I'd say apply anyways. Worse they will do it tell you no and the Partners bad mouth you, which might happen if you got the job anyways. A good way around this is to build a network with others who can vouch for you more than condemn you. If you have 1 guy that says you're dirt but 5 that say you're solid, sometimes people have to factor in a personality conflict. Simply said, not everyone gets along no matter how hard we try. So that's my advice. Good Luck.

Hi there,

You may as well apply!

Find out…

The thing is, this is neither a 100% chance or a 0% chance. So many things have to happen that you may as well go through the process to find out.

Hi there,

Q: Is this something that I should be concerned and stopping me to apply for this role?

Regardless of whether your previous boss might influence the hiring decision, I don’t see any disadvantage in applying:

  • If you apply, the worst case is that your boss might prevent the hiring, and you would end with a rejection
  • If you don’t apply, you will end up with no job with a 100% probability

So, in any case, I would still apply.

To strengthen the application, you might want to find a referral. You can find more on that below:

Good luck!

Hello,

Definitely try to apply if you are interested in the role - that way you have some chance of getting the position, vs. no chance at all if you don't apply! Regarding the likelihood of the reference check, this will depend, but given that you'll be applying for a position in a different continent it's not guaranteed. If there are many applicants for the position, they may not have the time to get a reference check for everyone, so there are decent odds that they won't reach back out to your former boss. In any case, you lose nothing from applying.

Hi there,

yes, you absolutely can apply, while success chances will depend a bit on the firm.

In most cases, your relationship with the previous boss will not become a major bottleneck, unless theres really “bad blood” - in a professional services business (= people-centric), that's not so common though as discrediting former staff can have a ripple effect on one's own rep, so most people won't take the risk, especially with regards to rather sjunior roles.

Feel free to share more context (firm, region) via DM, then I can give more tailored advice and help you navigate around this.

Hope this helps.

Regards, Andi

A few things need to happen for this to be true

  1. They need to be able to tie your application to you being employed there previously (quite possible for it to be done easily)
  2. You have to pass screening as the right fit for the role
  3. Your ex-boss has to still be employed there and remember you well enough
  4. HR would then need to also reach out to them as part of the screening process to proceed
  5. They will need to still be mad and say that you are a bad employee for quitting so soon

While all of the above can happen, the odds are low. Either way until you apply you will not know….worst case you can reach out to your old boss, apologize for your mistakes and show how you have matured.

Best,

Udayan

Hi there,

Yes, it might happen.

What's certain to happen is that they will ask you why you left the firm previously and then you need to have a good story for it.

But at the end of the day, that's just one firm, there are so many others to choose from.

What you need to develop is a strong application strategy that works regardless of any historical mishaps. Here's a guide on how to build one:
