Best time to apply

Hi All,

I have attended a consulting event 2 months ago for MBB and was told that there is no better time to apply at consulting firm now. Questions:

1. What are the reasons for that statement? Is it because of many firms are facing distressed situation therefore require more of consultants' services?

2. Seeing a lot of Q&A mentioning about delayed response or long waiting time in SEA Region, is it still a valid statement?

3. Is there any interesting information by any chance regarding the state of recruitment at this time in SEA Region?

Thank you!

Hi there,

I'm assuming you meant to say “no better time than now”

1. What are the reasons for that statement? Is it because of many firms are facing distressed situation therefore require more of consultants' services?

That was 2 months ago….the entire market has changed. In fact you may have missed the boat unfortunately. From everything I'm seeing, the big boom period was the past 1.5 years up until the past 3-4 weeks.

2. Seeing a lot of Q&A mentioning about delayed response or long waiting time in SEA Region, is it still a valid statement?

Sure. Delayed responses and long waiting times are common…and not just in SEA

3. Is there any interesting information by any chance regarding the state of recruitment at this time in SEA Region?

Network to find out. Apply when you're ready. This means you have a strong resume + cover letter and ideally a referral.

Hi there,

To be honest, that what you hear at all recruitment events. However, it also doesn't mean it's false.

Consulting firms recruit throughout the year and regardless of the economic situation. If the economy is up, there's a need for consultants, if the economy is down, there is again a need for consultants. Factor in that they only look for specific profiles with a specific skill-set, you might understand why they want as many people to apply as possible.

Good luck with your applications!

Best,

Cristian

Hello,

Don't worry too much about the things you are hearing, and apply when you are ready. I would agree with Emily that, given the potential of a recession, some offices may restrict hiring soon, so applying now would seem like a good option. But only apply if/when you are ready to go through the process - otherwise you are decreasing your chances of success, no matter how “optimal” the application time is!

Regarding delayed responses and long waiting times, that can happen when offices get a lot of applications, people are away on summer break, they are evaluating their hiring policies, etc. This usually stems from standard administrative delays, not restrictions or freezes of any sort. There are a lot of questions about that sort of thing on the forum, but it is certainly not unique to the SEA region.

Hi there,

1) What are the reasons for that statement? Is it because of many firms are facing distressed situation therefore require more of consultants' services?

Could be a number of reasons. Most likely high demand for projects or high internal churn within the firm.

2) Seeing a lot of Q&A mentioning about delayed response or long waiting time in SEA Region, is it still a valid statement?

I guess it depends on the company and region, SEA includes several countries so it is difficult to generalize.

3) Is there any interesting information by any chance regarding the state of recruitment at this time in SEA Region?

Same as above – it depends on which country you are targeting exactly. The situation may be quite different in two different offices.

Good luck!

Francesco

It‘s really hard to know what they meant - they could just have been drumming up applications with a motivating statement. That being said, given the impending recession it seems that many offices are restricting hiring, so I’d recommend getting the application in as soon as you feel ready, but not delaying long.

1. Until recently there was a significant lack of consultants. So consulting firms were trying hard to recruit people. Now the prospects are not as positive, so I believe they will be recruiting less. Not significantly less, but definitively less. A recession is expected for next year… This only does not apply to Middle East.

2. Because there was an intense recruiting (and consulting activity), everyone was overburden. Meaning that response times are (still) more stretched than usual.
