BCG Online Interview + Coaching?

Hello - I just passed the screening and the phone assessment with BCG and I have been informed that the first step is an online case.

- Did anyone take it before? what are the types of cases (profitability, M&A etc..) ? Hard/Easy?

Coaches who have expertise in the US BCG interview process please let me know in the comments, I am interested in 5 coaching sessions:

  1.  Session 1: Pre-Round 1 Go over my PE stories structures
  2. Sessions 2&3: 2 Pre-round 1 Coaching Sessions: Cases
  3. Sessions 4&5: 2 Pre-Final round Coaching Sessions: Cases. My final round is an unstructured convo with the head of the office I am applying to. But better be ready for a case !

Any input helps.

Thanks !

Hi there,

The new BCG Online Case (also called Chatbot Interview) is a new 8-10 questions test BCG started to use in the last years and now expanded globally. It is structured in 2 parts:

  • 8-10 questions to be taken in 25-30 minutes
  • 1 video interview question at the end, where you have to provide a recommendation

The main differences compared to the previous version (BCG Potential Test) are the following:

  1. 8-10 questions instead of 23
  2. 25-30 min instead of 45
  3. Calculators allowed
  4. Presence of open questions
  5. Video sum up at the end

The main challenges based on the candidates I helped are the following:

  1. Time. The questions are not particularly difficult, however you will feel time constraints also due to the fact you don’t know how difficult the next questions could be - thus how much time they may require
  2. Chatbot interaction. Unlike a test like the McK PST, you cannot proceed “at your own pace”. You will have to follow the evolution of the test as questions are revealed one by one
  3. Math. Candidates often find the math quite challenging given the time constraint

You can find an article on how to prepare here:

https://www.preplounge.com/en/articles/bcg-online-case

I helped several candidates for BCG US and usually in the first round you have:

  • Online Case (Chatbot + Video Interview)
  • Fit only interview

There may be differences according to your seniority though.

If you pass it, you move then to the final with cases.

In case you are interested in a program, you can find mine at the link below:

If you want to prepare for the Online Case in the best possible way, I created a software simulation replicating the chatbot and one-way video interview.

It includes the following and more:

  • 2 Software Simulations of the Chatbot. These are live chatbots simulating exactly the same chatbot environment of the test (meaning you will receive questions by an actual chatbot with a flow equivalent to the one of the test).
  • 2 PDF Simulations of the Chabot. These are additional tests Casey-style, meaning you will have 4 different Casey Chatbots to train.
  • 2 One-Way Video Interviews. These come with Artificial Intelligence reports, so that you can see how the Video Software will perceive your performance in terms of voice, speech clarity, energy and more.
  • Free access to 6 PSTs and Potential Tests for further practice.
  • Deep explanation of all the 5 types of questions asked in the BCG Online Case thanks to the complimentary 144-page guide.

You can get access to the software simulation and guide instantly here:

Former Project leader at BCG and LEK, with extensive experience as candidate and interviewer

Hi there,

I have been a Project Leader in BCG's Boston office until June 2021. I have extensive recruiting experience in the US system (both as an interviewee and interviewer), and have been coaching candidates in the US.

Frankly, I can't tell you that much about the online case as it got introduced just around the time that I left. However, I could connect with my friends at BCG to learn more and share back.

I know the US recruiting process and criteria (for both fit & cases) very well and most of my cases are ‘BCG-style’. I can also tell you more about some of the office heads which could set you up for the last round.

Drop me a note if you are interested in an intro call.

Best,

Seb

Hi there,

Please shoot me a message - while I prep a wide range of candidates, one of my main focuses is BCG and the US. (I am ex-BCG).

In terms of the online case, I have 2 live recordings I can share with you as well!

In terms of your questions, the online assessment is definitely hard. And, it can be on any topic (the two most common ones I have seen were M&A and Pricing/Investment)

Hi there,

You will need to practice for the chatbot, that's the online case interview.

Now, let me tell you that you are not approaching the coaching sessions the best way. The PE stories should be the last thing. Because you actually need much more time to get the cases prepared (so you want to start early and with the right support) and also because by doing it at the end you already understand better what consulting firms are looking for, and the coach already knows well your weaknesses.

By spending time with a candidate, I get a clear view on what will be the impression the interviewers will have, and how to craft the stories and answers in order to preempt any potential perceived weaknesses. It's not as effective in the beginning.

I also think that “cases” is too broad in terms of focus. I'd rather have a case in 1 session to brush up overall skills and identify areas that need work, and use the 2nd session to focus on the specific things that need further improvement (e.g. market sizing, exhibit reading, etc.). Usually on the 3rd session I would start focusing on communication and interaction with the interviewer, because by then you already have a solid foundation (you need to know what to communicate before you train on how to communicate it).

Hope this helps.
