BCG - how long to hear back from Round 1 & how to prepare for Round 2?

Hello,

I just finished Round 1 with 2 interviews from a Principal and a Partner. Just wondering how long it usually takes to hear back, and in the meantime how best to prepare for Round 2 if I get there? Since round 1 already had a partner, will round 2 differ much?

Thanks

Hi,

If you are applying to standard positions, you should typically hear back within 3–10 days, in some cases, it can stretch to 2 weeks. For niche or senior roles (when often there is only one spot available) even 3–4 weeks if they’re closing the full interview cycle.

For Round 2, I've done plenty of them myself as an interviewer in BCG. Don’t expect a completely different format. In most cases, it’s very similar to Round 1, just with a higher bar (I used exactly the same cases in both rounds).

That said, with more senior interviewers (e.g., MDPs/Senior MDPs), you might see shorter, more qualitative cases or a heavier focus on fit, especially if your casing was already strong in Round 1.

So preparation-wise, focus on doing the same things, maybe with a higher focus on cleaner structure, sharper insights, and more natural communication rather than trying to learn a new format.

If you want to discuss further feel free to DM me.

Regards,
Franco

Hey there,

Hearing back: it can take from 24hrs to 7-10 days. I would say the median is around 2-3 working days :). No worries if you don't hear back very early, it might just be because the Partner is travelling for client work.

Prep: R2 interviews have a faster tempo and can have more 'curveball' questions. When you prep with peers, tell them to behave less patiently, interrupting you more often if you don't give the right answer straight away, etc.. Try also to practice on weirder case types (industries you are not aware of, more conceptual prompts, etc.), beyond the standard market sizing of a B2C market :)

Good luck!

Best,

Tom

Hi there,

Could be same day. More likely it's after a few days/a week. Sometimes it can be weeks up to a month or two.

Sit tight, keep moving forward with your other interviews/applications, and they'll let you know once they've decided.

On Round 2: same game, higher bar. Your prep does not change.

In general you want to make sure you are practicing dribbling, passing, and shooting, NOT just playing matches. Make sense?

So, yes, do live cases with peers (not reading cases) AND, try to do some combination of:
Daily reading
Fast math
Charts/exhibits
Industry deep dives
Frameworking
Market sizing
Fit/Behavioral

Here's some more reading to help: https://www.preplounge.com/en/articles/pitfalls-case-interview-preparation

Fingers crossed!

Hi, usually you hear back quite fast — anywhere from a couple of days to ~1 week. Sometimes even faster if they’ve already aligned internally. If it goes a bit longer, it’s not necessarily negative.

On Round 2:
Even if you already had a Partner, Round 2 is still typically:

  • more senior interviewers (often Partners)
  • similar format (fit + case)
  • but with a slightly different focus

The main difference is:

  • more emphasis on communication and presence
  • more challenging / less structured conversations
  • they test whether they would feel comfortable putting you in front of a client

Cases can feel more:

  • open-ended
  • discussion-based
  • less “textbook”

How to prepare now:

  • Keep doing cases, but focus less on frameworks and more on:
    • being clear
    • driving the discussion
    • adapting when things don’t go as planned
  • Work on fit / personal stories:
    • be structured
    • be concise
    • have clear takeaways
  • Practice being calm under pressure:
    • take pauses
    • don’t rush
    • communicate simply

Overall, you don’t need to reinvent your prep.
Just shift from “getting the case right” to being someone they trust in front of a client.

If you want, happy to help you get ready for Round 2

Congrats on getting through Round 1.

Timing wise, BCG usually comes back in 3 to 7 working days. Some offices are faster, some take up to 10. If you hear nothing by day 10, a polite nudge to the recruiter is fine.

Do not take a break. Keep prepping. A few things to focus on:

  • Expect 2 to 3 interviews, mostly Partners and Senior Partners. Cases get harder and more ambiguous.
  • Prompts will have less structure. You will need sharper clarifying questions and more ownership of the case.
  • Math gets trickier. More layered calculations and exhibits to read fast.
  • PEI goes deeper. Probing follow-ups testing judgement, leadership, and real impact.
  • Nail your "why BCG" and "why this office" answers. Senior interviewers weigh fit heavily.

Since a Partner already interviewed you in Round 1, Round 2 will feel different. More conversational, more judgement-based. Less about structuring a case, more about whether they want you on their team.

Quick tips:

  • Do 3 to 4 Partner-level mock cases this week. Ask your partners to go harder than usual.
  • Refresh your PEI stories. Say them out loud, not in your head.
  • Review your Round 1 cases. Think about what to fix.

Good luck.

BCG typically gets back within a few days to a week after Round 1, but delays of up to two weeks are completely normal and don’t signal anything negative. While you wait, it’s smart to prepare as if Round 2 is coming.

Round 2 usually feels more challenging, even if you already had a partner in Round 1. Expect more pressure‑testing of your structure, deeper probing on your assumptions, and more emphasis on how you think rather than what you conclude. The personal fit part also becomes more important.

The best prep is to tighten your structuring, practice communicating your reasoning clearly under pressure, and run a few cases with tougher interviewers who push back. If you performed well in Round 1, Round 2 will feel like a natural extension rather than a surprise.

Hi there,

Congrats on finishing the first round!

Typically, you hear back in max 2 weeks.

When they call, make sure you ask for feedback. And if the feedback is vague, ask for specifics. It's important to understand what specifically you did that then made them give you that feedback. If that's clear, then it will help you be more targeted with your Round 2 prep.

Usually, the second round is scheduled in 1-2 weeks after you hear back from the first round, but they're flexible.

If you need any help, reach out.

Best,
Cristian
