Asking for a referral after applying on the system

Hello,

I have a call scheduled with a Principal at  one of the MBBs. I had already applied on the website without a referral a couple of weeks ago.

Having got this opportunity to potentially get a referral from him, how do I go about indirectly asking for it given that I have already applied for the role?

Any tips/advice would be really appreciated. Thank you very much!

Hello!

I don´t think it´s what so ever too late. If the person likes you and wants to refer you, will do so, and then it doesn´t really matter that you had already applied, so good news.

Prepare for the talk so you can have a good and insightful one, in which you can show that you are highly interested and prepared. Research this person as much as you can, so you can make relevant questions about the things he knows and where he works.

If that is successful, the referring will come without asking.

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

Hi!

You could tell your referee about this so that he/she could directly mention that to HR.

Hope this helps.

Best,

Hi there,

Quite honestly, it's probably too late. You're generally supposed to get a referral before you apply.

That said, I wouldn't worry about it too much. A call with a Principal is great but even then the odds of a referral from him/her aren't huge (networking is a persistence game).

If he/she offers a referral, just flag to them that you already applied and ask if there's anything they can do (they'll likely offer to forward your resume to the recruiting team, which would be great). If they don't offer a referral, that's fine, just make sure you learned a lot about the firm during the call!

Ideally you get the referral before you apply. But it's never too late to get it. Now, don't ask directly. Mention you already applied and if there is anything else you can do (you, not him/her) to optimize your chances - they'll get the hint, and will refer if they think it's worth it.
