Applying to MBB as an experienced undergrad with around 2 years work experience

Hi all,

I have a question on how I should apply as an experienced undergrad with around 2 years of experience working at a T2 consulting (graduated college in 2024, starting working full time Sept 2024): do I apply through the grad/experienced undergrad track in October? Or can I just apply whenever I want through referrals? I have referrals from all 3 MBB and one from Bain mentioned that the cycle for experienced hires is in winter but if I find a position online she can put my name in for it; I saw the Associate Consultant position is available on Bain's website, so do I just have her refer me there?

Confused on what would be best course of action in my situation and looking for guidance.

Thank you all for your help!

Hi,

With 2 years of consulting experience, you're still generally viewed as an early-career hire, not as a true experienced hire or expert. That means you still have quite a bit of flexibility in how you apply.

My advice would be to leverage your referrals rather than waiting for a specific "experienced hire" recruiting cycle. If there's an open Associate Consultant/Associate position that matches your profile, having your contact submit a referral is likely the strongest approach.

The main benefit of waiting for an experienced hire process is usually for candidates with significantly more experience (e.g. 4 to 6+ years) or with deep functional expertise.

Good luck!

Hi there,

With ~2 years at a Tier-2 you technically qualify for the October track (you're an early-career hire, not a senior lateral, for which you'd need more experience), but going through a referral is the stronger lever: your CV lands directly on the HR desk and you don't have to wait for the next formal hiring window (which is also riskier, since your CV might get screened out before it's even seen). So for the role at Bain, I'd definitely recommend having your friend refer you directly to that posting.

One thing worth knowing on tenure recognition: two years at a tier-2 usually gets partly recognized. At BCG, for example, candidates who performed well typically had a year recognized, joining straight as an A2; the exceptional ones had both years recognized and came in as an A3 (or SA, depending on the office's job titles).

Hope it helps, and good luck with the prep!
