Applying at two different roles in two different MBB offices

Hi everyone,

In June I will hold two master's degrees and was initially considering joining an MBB firm in Belgium at a Junior Associate (McKinsey)/Associate (BCG)/Associate Consultant (Bain) level. Recently I have been thinking of making the move across the pond in America because I believe I can join at an Associate (McKinsey)/Consultant (BCG/Bain) level given my background. Moreover, I am an American citizen, so work permit wise there is no issue.

Would it be ok if I applied at a US office for the Associate (McKinsey)/Consultant (BCG/Bain) level while also simultaneously applying in Belgium for a a Junior Associate (McKinsey)/Associate (BCG)/Associate Consultant (Bain) position?

Thank you,

Sebastian

Hi Sebastian,

First of all, congratulations on receiving your 2nd master's degree!

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for quite a lot of users, so I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

  • First of all, I would advise you to double check with the recruiters about the correctly entry level position in both regions, especially given the “Associate” (McKinsey) is the post-MBA position as opposed to the “Associate” (BCG) and “Associate Consultant” (Bain).
  • Secondly, while in general, all MBB companies have global recruiting standards, numerous coachees of mine were able to interview in two regions simultaneously. As such, I would advise you to first think about your prioritized region, apply there, and then send the other application with a slight delay. At worst, you will get an instant rejection from the latter application.

In case you want a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming MBB interviews, please feel free to contact me directly.

I hope this helps,

Hagen

Hi there,

You need submit one application per company. So, you cannot have an application for McK US AND a separate application for McK Europe.

That said, when you submit your application, you can normally provide office preferences - I would encourage you to do this.

Finally, go with the flow in your applications. Wherever networking has been smoother/more fruitful and you feel you have better/deeper connections, apply to that country/office as the primary choice.

Good luck!

Hi Ian,

Thank you for your answer. What is still unclear for me is how I would know which office suits me best. Maybe I do not fully understand how the office preference works. When I give a top 3 of the offices, does that mean that I will automatically have interviews at all three offices? Or does the first choice conduct interviews and if they don't write an offer I get to interview at my second choice?

Thank you!

They will chose the office you will recruit with, considering your preferences (i.e., they may provide you an interview for your 2nd option, if they don't have a strong need for the first location or they think you would be a better fit for the 2nd one.

1. You can only submit one application for those firms. I.e., you submit an application globaly, provide your office preference, and they decide to which of your preferences you will be interviewing with.

2. The rank you apply for should be similar accross countries. I find it hard that you would be recruiting for an entry level if you have a masters from a top school + some years of experience.

McKinsey recruiting is global so you cannot apply for different roles at different offices with the idea you will beat the odds in some way. If you are an American citizen and want to work here, just apply to the US offices you will definitely have it easier vs non citizens especially if you go to a target school and meet other relevant hiring criteria.

Thank you! However, then what is the point of giving an office preference if you will be interviewed at you #1 office regardless?

It is a preference so they match your preference to the needs at each office. If there's no space in your first choice but you're still a strong candidate they will go to choice two etc.

Hello!

What it´s said officially and on paper (for McK, that is the case that I know best) is that recruiting is global, and hence you can only have one application open. Inside it, you can provide preferences.

However, you can also try and submit two different ones -perhaps with slightly different details?- and see what happens.

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara
