Applied for Junior Associate Role and Want to Switch to Business Analyst

Hi,

I am a recent graduate from Texas A&M University at Qatar (Masters and Bachelors- summa cum laude) in chemical engineering. After which I started a startup and grew it.

I loved the work and applied to McKinsey to a junior associate role as I initially thought it matched my masters degree. After reading online, it seems like Business Analyst role would be more appropriate. I already finished the problem solving game and did well and hoping to go to case studies.

Should I switch my application? How can I switch?

Hello!

Congratulations on getting through the game - I've got everything crossed for you!

I wouldn't try to switch your application, but speak to HR and ask them which role they think you should be applying for. They will know what they're looking for and are best placed to guide you.

Good luck!

Hi Arshad,

It sounds like Junior Associate is actually about right for you. If you're in doubt, just reach out to HR! You can have an open/frank conversation about your background to see where they see you fitting.

Hi Arshad,

Sometimes the appropriate rank/position can be a little grey, especially for experienced hires who do not fall into the OCR profiles.

Would suggest the following

  1. Have a candid conversation with HR
    • Be honest about your background and experience so HR can also have a better sense of placing you
    • However don't downplay yourself - you clearly have made the first cut (many do not)
  2. Search on LinkedIn (and ask HR as well) where other similar profiles have joined
    • This would give you a better sense on where you might fit

All the best!

Hi Arshad,

Depending on how many years of experience you have with the startup, a JA position may or may not be appropriate.

If you think a BA may be more appropriate (as mentioned by Benjamin you may check on LinkedIn to get an idea), I would call HR to align with them.

Good luck!

Francesco

Hey there,

For McKinsey, after 3 years you are usually no longer considered for the BA role.

The interviews will not be different for JA or BA, however, the expectations for your work and performance are different once you join.

Hence, if you feel uncomfortable with that role, I'd reach out to HR directly right now (call them!) and discuss transparently.

All the best for your interviews!

Hello!

Don't worry about it at this point. When Recruiting looks at your CV, if they are interested, will reach out for the adequate position. THey will assess whether it would be better suited for a BA role, and suggest it.

Cheers,

Clara
