Application still open despite ghosting?

A few months back, I went through the interview process at an MBB, but was ghosted after the second round.

I just checked, and the application is still active on the application portal, so it was never formally closed.

Any idea what this means / what could have happened?

Definitely terrible and unprofessional behavior, but unfortunately that sometimes happen.

Im just wondering, why did you take so long to think about it and try to figure it out?

In any case, It could just be an honest mistake, but it’s very uncommon to not get an official reply, including some feedback on why you didn’t pass, if that is the case.

Definitely reach out to HR to understand what happened.

Hi there,

First of all, I am sorry to hear about your negative experience!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your situation:

  • First of all, it's not uncommon for firms to have delays in updating their application portals. This might not reflect the actual status of your application.
  • Moreover, even if you most likely have been rejected in the meantime, I would advise you to reach out to the recruiter for clarification. This will give you a definite answer and also show your continued interest in the position.

You can find more on this topic here: How to deal with a rejection from a consulting company.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Unfortunately the application portal is not always a good indicator of the decision making process. Often times it is not updated or there are technical issues.

If you were ghosted that's firstly terrible behavior given that you deserve a proper rejection if that is the outcome. It could be they are waiting to see how to proceed in which case maybe ask HR if your application is indeed rejected so you get closure on what happened.

Hi there,

I'm sorry but if it has been a few months then it's extremely unlikely that they are still considering you.

Ideally, you would have reached out around week 2 to follow-up. At this point, you can still follow-up, but definitely network + apply to other firms.

Hi there,

Q: Any idea what this means / what could have happened?

This is quite unusual. I would recommend calling HR to ask for an update. It could be that there was an error related to your application, which is why you have not heard from them.

Good luck!

That's rather strange. It's definitely more of an exception than the rule.

My strong recommendation would be to reach out to the recruiter and ask for an update on this. There is a small small chance that somehow they overlooked your application.

Cristian

Hey,

I would try and reach the recruiter by multiple channels (Phone, email, Linkedin) in order to figure out the final outcome.

Good luck,
Nick
