What to expect from Lazard HireVue?

Hi all,

I was recently invited to complete a one-way video interview (HireVue) for Lazard’s Investment Banking Analyst role in London. I wasn’t aware that Lazard used this type of assessment in the early stages, so I’m a bit unsure what to expect.

The invite mentions there will be a few questions, but doesn’t specify if they’ll be behavioral, technical, or market-based. For those who’ve gone through this before: Do you remember what types of questions came up? How technical does it get at this stage?

Hey, from what I’ve heard, Lazard’s HireVue for the Investment Banking Analyst role focuses mainly on behavioral and motivational questions—things like Why M&A?, Why Lazard?, examples of leadership or teamwork, and Why you over others? It’s unlikely to be technical, but it helps to know your resume, market basics, and a recent Lazard deal.

It’s a good idea to have a few strong stories ready from different parts of your experience—academic, internships, or extracurriculars—that you can adapt to suit various prompts.

They assess how well you align with their values and culture, so research the firm and use the STAR method to structure your answers. Because it's a one-way video with no retakes—just prepare early, relax, and keep your responses framed and brief.

Hey, I haven't done it myself, but I've heard from others that Lazard's HireVue focuses mainly on behavioral and motivational questions at this stage. These were questions like “Why Lazard?”, “Why investment banking?” and examples of leadership or teamwork. Usually the questions at this early stage are not very technical, but it's helpful to be familiar with basic market trends and your resume, just in case.

Hey there! 😊

Great that you’ve got the HireVue invite!

Max gave a solid overview (and I’d agree – the focus is usually on motivation and fit), but just to add a few thoughts: Even if it’s not super technical, I’d still recommend prepping a tight, confident pitch about your story – especially why banking, why Lazard, and how your experiences so far reflect strong analytical or team skills.

Also don’t underestimate the format itself. One-way video can feel awkward at first, so it’s worth practicing answering into a camera, staying calm, and keeping your energy up even without live feedback.

And finally – while deep technicals usually come later, having one or two current market themes in your back pocket can help you sound polished if it comes up.
