What are the main activities of McKinsey in their Sydney office?

Hi all,

I would like to learn more about the main activities of McKinsey in their Sydney, Australia office. I heard that they are a centre of excellence especially for financial services. Is that accurate?

Thanks in advance

Hi there,

Based on my experience working for MBB in Australia, the major consulting industries in Australia are as follows:

Tier 1

  • Finance (Big 4 banks et al)
  • Energy (ranging from Oil & Gas to electricity networks/distribution)
  • Mining
  • CPG/Retail - especially the major supermarkets Coles/Woolies

Tier 2

  • Insurance
  • Healthcare
  • Government/Public Sector (close to Tier 1)
  • TMT (Especially telecomms)

Tier 3

  • Agriculture
  • Large Capex/Infrastructure
  • PE

It does change over time but latest I've heard is that financial services is a pretty large sector for the office. At the same time there's a good spread of other sectors including telecom, energy and materials, retail, to public sector. Other than speaking to current consultants in the office, a good way to get a feel is to scan through the partner profiles as they will be indicative of the client work (https://www.mckinsey.com/au/our-people). In the past corporate restructuring and mining was a huge chunk of the client work but the mix has greatly diversified in the last few years.

Hey there,

A big chunk of it is in the banking/ insurance sector, public sector, and mining.

Hi,

For a long time, it was the fastest-growing office. Huge retail, banking, basic materials (mostly Perth office).

Hello!

Traditionally banking and mining, however, this is constantly evolving -in a matter of months-.

A good way to have a look is looking at the exit opportunities from those who are leaving

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara
