McKinsey Referral Process

Hi. So I've had a few consultants at McKinsey either send me referral links or ask me to send them my resume so they can pass it along to recruiting. This all happened 2 months ago, and I was wondering if the links/resume drop is still valid as I haven't yet applied.

Also, I've made lots of edits to my resume since. Would I need to reach back out to those people and ask them to attach my new resume to my application once I send it in? Not sure how that process works exactly.

Thanks for the help.

Hi there,

1) I was wondering if the links/resume drop is still valid as I haven't yet applied.

You can for sure still reach out to the person who offered to forward the CV. I would expect the link to also be still valid, if that’s not the case, you can reach out to HR to ask for a new link.

2) Would I need to reach back out to those people and ask them to attach my new resume?

Given you still have to reach out to them to confirm that it is fine to refer you, it is ok to send them the last version of your CV.

Good luck!

Francesco

Hi thank you for your response. And sorry, I should've clarified a bit more. I'm more so curious about how the resume drop process works. If someone submits my resume into the system, will my application only be tied to that particular copy of my resume? Or is it tied to my name? The issue is I've fallen out of contact with one of the people that said they passed my resume to HR. I've tried reaching out but haven't gotten a response. I was curious if I were to submit my application right now with my updated resume, would that referral be attached to my name/application at all. Thanks so much

Hi there, if you apply with a new CV as part of the formal application, the new CV should be taken into consideration. If you still see the old CV after uploading the new one for whatever reason, I would recommend reaching out to HR and providing them with the new CV. Good luck! Francesco

Hi there,

Depends on the office but you should

  • always send the most updated resume for the application (so yes, do send them the new version)
  • try out if the links still work and if not, ask for new ones :-))

Cheers,

Florian

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your questions:

  • First of all, I would advise you to simply ask the people who gave you the opportunity for a referral about both aspects. However, please be prepared that they may not like the fact that you sent them an "old" resume or have not yet applied via the hyperlinks.
  • Moreover, please keep in mind that you can eventually only have one valid referral.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming McKinsey interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

If the link doesn't work, reach out to them. When you apply, just submit the last resume and that's the one that will be considered.
