As Anna said, I would not let the timing drive this decision. The bar and the interviewers stay the same through the cycle; there are simply more open slots earlier, before the office fills up.

Walking into a second round underprepared costs you far more, because it costs you the interview plus the cooling-off period before you can reapply, while moving the slot costs you nothing.

So I would take the date that lets you arrive at your best.

McKinsey will not mind and this does not ding your chance at all.

As you're an experienced hire, you absolutely can choose the later date they offered you. They would not offer the Chicago date if they were not willing to interview you then.

Could headcount change? Technically, yes. But that is outside your control, and accepting an official date they offered is not a negative signal. Pick the date and location that let you perform best.

Choosing an official Chicago date that recruiting offered should not count against you. If the office were unwilling to interview on that date, it would not normally be presented as an option. The material question is which date lets you perform at your best.

There is still a small external risk: hiring needs can change during any long process. You cannot eliminate that risk by taking an earlier interview while distracted, travelling or underprepared. If you choose the later date, reply promptly, confirm that it remains for the same Chicago Associate role, and ask whether there is any role-specific deadline you should know about.

Then use the extra time deliberately. Diagnose your weakest case and fit skills, schedule realistic mocks and practise the full second-round experience. Two additional months help only if they produce a stronger performance. Otherwise, take one of the earlier dates that you can attend without compromising preparation.

I wouldn't worry too much about the timing. McKinsey typically recruits on a rolling basis, and I personally interviewed about a month later than some of my peers without it affecting my chances or eventual offer outcome. If the later date works better for you, I'd focus on using the extra time to prepare and perform at your best.

I wouldn’t assume that choosing the later Chicago date hurts your chances. Since McKinsey offered you that date directly, I’d expect it to be a valid interview slot rather than a sign that your candidacy is being deprioritized.

The bigger consideration is simply keeping your momentum during those two months. I’d use the extra time to sharpen cases and your fit stories rather than worrying about the hiring pool.

Since you’re applying from Canada to the US, you could also use the recruiter call to confirm whether the hiring timeline or headcount has any implications for your specific role.

For such a big office, and considering that you're applying for an Associate role (which is a generalist, not a specialist role), the risk of them 'filling in' their positions by then is low. 

Needless to say, it's impossible to say what happens in the meantime, but to a reasonable extent I don't imagine it to be a problem. And if you have no alternative, then this is the best that you're working with. 

I'm a bit surprised though that the next best date is literally 2 months out.
