MBB Background Check Question

Hi everyone,

Just finished filling the background check for an MBB firm through thier third party (hireright). In my CV I have listed different work assignments at the same employer each with a different title. These titles are not offically used in the company system but rather frequently used by employees over linkedIn and such, would this show as a discrpency or not a big deal?

Hello!

Usually I would tell you that nothing to worry about.

However, perhaps annecdotically, I had a similar issue with the background check for my MBA in MIT Sloan.

I listed my Amazon position as we always refer to it, even in Linkedin. However, Amazon HR has another title for it internally, more technical, and this is what came up in the backgroun check. It was honestly a mess, I had to get a signed letter from Amazon HR Europe stating that those 2 were equivalent.

In any case, only a loss of time, nothing that cannot be fixed.

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

Hi, this won't be a big deal.

I just went through my background check two months ago, and they were not checking for titles (one of my previous employers told me what they asked for after they responded to the call). I even had some different titles over my time working at one company, and it was not an issue.

They mainly look for if you worked there, when you started/left, and if you're eligible for re-hire/what the reason was for leaving at a very general level.

Hope this helps!

Hi there,

This isn't great. You should have used the official titles.

However, while they may have some questions around this discrepency, when/if they see this they will most certainly reach out to HR in your company to clarify.

I'm going to assume the titles aren't all that different and just paint your role more clearly?

What I mean is, you'll only be in trouble if you called yourself "Director" on your resume but your role in the company was "Assistant", for example.

Hi,

Most probably they'll not check it. the purpose of the background check is to verify overall employment and if you are holding any equity. However, might vary by country

Yes, no big deal. Unless you actually provided a different job with different prestige, the worst thing that happens is a clarification which might delay the process.

Hi there,

Congrats on your MBB offer. If the job titles are comparable it should not be an issue. Worst case, they will ask for some clarification and you can ask your former employer to confirm they are equivalent.

Best,
Francesco
