Interesting question. Today the lines of strategy vs implementation firms are being blurred more than ever. You are seeing MBB move more into implementation/ops and the implementation players move more into strategy.
In my experience, MBB offers the whole suite of PMO. The more interesting question for consultants on the job (as it affects the type of work they do) is more in terms of the level of involvement of the PMO
- On the one end, you have passive PMO - which is just responsible for tracking and monitoring
- On the other end, you have activist PMO which takes on more tasks and responsibilities to challenge and drive outcomes (e.g. participating in meetings as a contributing member)
