How to ask for mock interviews from unacquainted consultants?

Focusing on The Core: Mock Interviews

I've seen several coaches on Preplounge recommending candidates to ask for “mock interviews” during the networking process.

Just wondering how feasible it is? Consultants are busy people, I hesitate to ask for mock interviews from unacquainted friends already, as it seems like a big favor. Is it really practical to ask for mock interviews from a person you have just talked to the first time? How to request mock interviews in a polite way?

Thank you for your suggestions.

My recommendation is to ask them if their consulting firm / office offers mock interviews. They may offer themselves to do one, or point you to someone in their firm who is doing that.

But make sure you are not doing more than 1 mock interview per consulting firm. They do it so you can experience the feeling of a “real” interview, but you don't want to be seen as a “high maintenance” candidate.

Hi there,

Couldn't agree more with Pedro!

Ask if the firm offers it. I definitely would not request it diretly (it's too demanding of their time…your instincts are correct here).

Furthermore, you don't even need to ask those consultants! When HR informs you of your interview invite, ask them if they have a policy of assigning case buddies.

Hi!

It really depends on the relationship you build with the specific consultant. If you can catch their attention you'll find the right time to ask or they might directly offer you that.

Best,

Anto

Why hesitate? If you want a mock interview - you should try to get it. In some consulting firms, they offer you upfront along with the interview invite. Sometimes you can ask the HR to arrange for it. Otherwise do ask the acquaintances.
