Hi there,

A group of researchers ran an experiment for a painting class where students had painted 10 paintings over the course of the class.

Group A: Could select 1 of their 10 to take home

Group B: Were given a random painting (had no choice).

After a month they were asked how happy they were with their painting and if they wanted to switch?

Which group was happier? Group B. Which group opted to keep their painting at a higher rate? Group B.

Comparison is the thief of joy.

You made your choice. It was the right one. Now move forward!

OP, it’s a massive myth that BCG has a friendlier culture than McK. This is just perpetuated by people who have no experience with either firm. Ultimately, your personal experiences at any consulting firm depend on the team you land on.

The fact is that BCG right now is hiring less, on a global scale, than McK and Bain. They are also counselling more people out, and are stricter with performance reviews. At this point in time, it is the worst of the three MBB to work for.

If you feel McK is still open to hiring you, that is the smarter decision.

Hi there,

Q: Should I make a switch?

What is your long-term goal with consulting? Unless McKinsey provides significant upsides compared to BCG for that, there is no real reason for you to switch. Without additional information though it is difficult to comment.

If you want please feel free to PM me for more feedback.

Best,

Francesco

While the grass may look greener on the other side… it won't feel less cutthroat at Mckinsey…

My advice on this is that you should stay while you feel that your career is going well, and look for alternatives when it is not. If you feel people like you and support you and want your success, even if it feels competitive, you should stay. When you start feeling stuck or even worse, getting the impression that things are going downhill, it's time to look for an alternative.
