That's a good answer that gets to the heart of the matter. Especially considering that 5-year-olds have a short attention span.

This question is meant to test whether you really understand what you do—and whether you can make it clear and relatable. The trick is to keep it super simple, use analogies, and focus on the big-picture why of your work, not the jargon.

So for your background—strategy consulting, infrastructure, commercial advisory, etc.—here’s a child-friendly version of what you could say in spirit:

“I help people build big things like roads, trains, and bridges. But before they start building, they have to make really big decisions, like where it should go, how much it will cost, and who will pay for it. My job is to help them figure all that out and make sure they’re making smart choices with their money.”

Now, in your actual personal fit interview, the point isn’t to repeat this word-for-word—it’s to show that you understand your role at the most basic level: solving problems and helping people or businesses make better decisions. If you can explain it simply, it shows you’ve thought deeply about it.

So you might say something like:

“If I had to explain my job to a 5-year-old, I’d say I help people plan and pay for really big projects like train lines or roads. My job is to help them figure out the smartest way to do it—what it’ll cost, who’s involved, and how to make sure it works well.”

That communicates clarity, humility, and purpose. And it gives the interviewer a reason to believe you’re grounded and thoughtful, which are key traits they’re often testing for with these kinds of questions.

Hey There!

Explaining your role to a 5-year-old means breaking down complex tasks into simple, relatable ideas. For example, if you work in finance, you might say, “I help people and companies keep track of their money so they can buy things they need and plan for the future.” This approach shows you can communicate clearly and make complicated things easy to understand, which is an important skill in any job.

In a Personal Fit interview, I would use this question to demonstrate my ability to simplify ideas and connect with different audiences. I’d explain how I would focus on the core purpose of my role and use everyday examples to make it relatable. This shows self-awareness, communication skills, and the ability to think creatively—all qualities that employers appreciate when building effective teams.
