Hi there,
Firstly, congrats on passing previous rounds, and getting it to this one!
I have conducted dozens of these TEI (Technical Experience Interviews) for McKinsey - happy to share my experience:
1. The Technical Interview is there to assess your current level of knowledge and experience within the field/expertise relevant to the role you are applying for.
2. Typically, consulting firms will be testing 3 things:
A) What is your relevant industry and content experience and knowledge level
B) What is your current understanding of relevant tools and methodologies within this expertise (e.g., software solutions one can use, etc.)
C) How effectively are you maintaining and continuing to build your knowledge base
What you should expect from this type of interview is a conversation, typically structured around you telling the interviewer 1-3 stories of past projects you have done within this expertise, so that they can gauge your level of knowledge. The interviewer will typically ask a lot of probing questions.
If you'd like some support and more detailed help with prep, please feel free to reach out!
Sincerely,
Thor
Hey there :)
A “technical fit” interview usually checks how well your technical skills align with the team’s daily work and how you apply them in a consulting context. Since you already passed two technical rounds, this one is often more about seeing how you communicate your expertise, collaborate, and fit into project teams rather than testing new technical depth. Expect questions about your previous projects, how you solve problems, and how you’d handle client situations using your technical background.
best, Alessa :)
This is an interview for those applying for expert / specialist roles where they will be testing your knowledge.
That is because the classic case interview is there to test your skills.
So in the technical interview you will likely be going with the interviewer through specific situations or cases where they are interested in your actual expertise, the industry-specific knowledge that you should have for that role.
Best,
Cristian
