What should I expect - Mckinsey Technical Experience Assessment (TEI)

Hi,

I have been invited to interview for the role of Delivery Manager in the Implementation Practice, and one of the interviews is a Technical Experience Assessment (TEI) which does not exist in a typical Consulting track. My questions are:

1. How many of my meaningful projects should I be talking about during this interview?

2. Is there any specific structure or methodology that the interviewer expects in my narrative?

3. What kind of counter or follow-up questions should I be expecting?

Thanks :)

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the invitation from McKinsey!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, I would strongly advise you to clarify the contents of the TEI further with the recruiter, as they differ from one practice to another. Generally speaking, though, it is used to assess a candidate's technical skills, knowledge and experience. The format and content of the interview will vary depending on the specific role and practice you are applying for, but it is similar to the problem-solving interview (PEI) part that McKinsey uses to evaluate a candidate's cultural fit.
  • Moreover, contrary to what other coaches have said, I would strongly advise against using the STAR framework, as it is overly simplistic and doesn’t accommodate the complex, lengthy situations you need to talk about in a McKinsey TEI.
  • Lastly, the questions from the interviewer will, of course, depend on the situation you're talking about and the depth you cover. Too many candidates do not go deep enough and subsequently have to answer numerous follow-up questions.

You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming McKinsey interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hello! First of all congratulations on the interview, I wish you good luck!

The interviewer will expect you to talk about 1-3 projects, depending on the level of detail you can get to. If the main project or projects you mention are relevant, the interviewer will not ask you for more (unless you want to reference them at some point).

There is no specific structure, many candidates like to use the "STAR" format, it's up to your style, but what I recommend is that you prepare your speech out loud in front of someone (can be a friend, relative or coach). That will guarantee that you make a wise use of the time you're given to show your best version.

Regarding the follow up questions, they will target the areas you didn't mention in your speech first (typically these are about technical credibility, ownership, and decision-making, e.g., how did you manage challenge during the implementation? why did you choose the approach you ended up taking? how did you track progress and success? who were your key stakeholders, and how did you influence them?).

Hope this helps!!

Great that you've clarified this with the recruiter upfront.

I would actually ask them for more details, since even the TEI differs slightly in format between different practices.

What's important to understand is that while the general case study tries to analyse your problem solving skills (or more generally your transferable skills), the TEI wants to assess the actual knowledge you need to be effective in that specialist role. You don't have the PEI for generalist, integrative consultant roles.

Whenever I prepare the TEI with candidates, we work in detail through several stories that show the breadth and depth of their experience. The key here is to show with clear examples the parallels between your work in the past and the work you would be doing in the future at McK.

Feel free to reach out directly if you need any help.

Best,
Cristian
