Tough Math Casebook to Prep

Hello everyone,
Maths is currently my weak point and I am looking to prep with tough math casebooks. I'm not looking for the more simple ones, but more towards tough structuring questions or ones that have tricky maths in them.

Open to suggestions please. Thank you

Hi there,

Great to see you focusing on improving your math skills for case interviews—this is a critical area for success. Here are some resources and strategies I recommend:

  1. Case Books with Advanced Math:
    • Look for university consulting club casebooks (e.g., INSEAD, LBS, or Wharton). These often contain real-life cases with challenging math problems.
    • Case in Point by Marc Cosentino includes math-heavy mini-cases to help refine your skills.
  2. Practice Frameworks with Numbers:
    • Focus on profitability, market sizing, and growth strategy cases—these usually involve tricky calculations.
  3. Dedicated Math Prep:
    • Use tools like Victor Cheng’s LOMS math drills or PrepLounge’s Quick Mental Math Tool. These are excellent for practicing speed and accuracy.
    • Regularly solve GMAT or GRE math problems—they're great for building calculation speed and handling complex data.
  4. Mock Interviews with Tough Cases:
    • Partner with peers or coaches who can provide challenging cases with tough math components. Consistent exposure will improve your confidence and speed.

Focus on practicing daily, and remember, it’s not just about solving the math but also communicating your thought process clearly.

Good luck!

Hi there!

Math issues may mean different things:

- understanding of what is being asked

- performing the equations’ structure

- chart understanding / reading

- conducting the actual math

- communicating the insights of the results

- having math anxiety when you’re under pressure

Doing random exercises without knowing the HOW behind their responses is like not knowing how to play the guitar, buying a guitar and expecting to get good at it by playing without instructions.

Here is what I would recommend you to do. Follow these 4 steps:

1) Check your past cases’ notes and identify what your specific weakness are

2) Search for materials that teach how to approach/ solve that part (YouTube, articles, free courses)

3) Do drills just for those parts and use the content of the materials, at the beginning you can allow yourself to use cheat sheets (just like a beginner musician would do).

4) Look for an experienced case partner or hire a coach that can evaluate if you have made progress in an environment that is similar to the case interview and how close you are to the top performers

—

Math was once my weakness too and today is one of the skills that set me apart from my peers - you’ll see that it goes way beyond passing a case interview. If I could do it, so can you.
If you want professional assistance to definitely overcome this issue, send me a message, will be glad to help!

Best,

Mari

Hi,

Some case books with tough math calculations I have used before are:

  • "Case in Point: Complete Case Interview Preparation" by Marc P. Cosentino

  • "Crack the Case System: How to Conquer Your Case Interviews" by David Ohrvall

  • "The Consulting Bible" by Alan Weiss

  • "Mastering the Case Interview" by Alexander Chernev

  • "Consulting Case 101: 50 Most Common Case Interview Questions and Answers" by Jenny Rae Le Roux

  • "Case Interviews: The Ultimate Guide" by Kevin Ding

Let me know if you need further help.

Mattijs

Hi there,

First, use rocketblocks.

Second, who cares about the casebooks...get people to case you.

I do have all of the MBA case books but I'm sorry as that is reserved for candidates.

That said, here is a HUGE list here of free cases:

https://www.firmsconsulting.com/quarterly/case-interview-examples/

That should keep you busy for a while :)

=================================================

BUT please remember that what matters most is your caser. Most cases are somewhat unrealistic and no case perfectly matches what will happen in the interview. Newer doesn't mean better.

Reading a case is NOT doing a case.

Rather, you need to get wide exposure to all types of case (both standard and nonstandard ones) and all types of interviewers.

Much more important than just reading a "hard" McKinsey case or having a friend case you in it, is actually how you're cased. I can make the easiest case be your worst nightmare (as can any other coach). Make sure that, if you're really trying to get pushed hard and get prepared for the toughest cases, you're looking at hiring a coach...delivery is truly key here!

The newer the case doesn't matter. Having 100+ cases doesn't help.  Reading case books has diminishing returns.

You need to get people to case you.
