Summarize before final recommendation?

Hi! When asked to give a final recommendation, do you recommend briefly summarizing the case first, or should I just start right away with "I recommend X because ...."

I have received different advice on this from various case partners, so I am curious what is best!

Better to be top-down.

As with real life presentations, the sooner you can show the overall answer, the better.

'I recommend XYZ, based on ABC points covered during our analysis.'

Then briefly cover the key insights for each of A, B, and C. That way you're covering the case while still communicating according to the pyramid principle.

Hi,

Always communicate top down and give a recommendation from the start (based on the goal of the case) and back this up with proofpoints. Do not explain what you covered during the interview.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Hi there,

Great question — and it’s something many candidates wonder about.

Best practice is to lead with your recommendation right away (e.g., “I recommend the client proceed with X because…”). This shows decisiveness and top-down communication, which consultants are trained to use.

After that, briefly summarize your key supporting points — no need to rehash the entire case, just the most critical evidence that drove your conclusion.

So in short:
→ Start with the recommendation
→ Follow with 2–3 key reasons
→ Keep it structured and concise

This approach demonstrates clarity, structure, and confidence — all things interviewers are looking for.

Hope that helps and please feel free to reach out if you need practise or advice.

Hi there,

Always play back the case mission briefly before communicating the recommendation.

Why?

Not only to contextualise your answer, but to confirm to the client one more time that you were working in the right direction and that you both agree on the question that was being solved.

Best,
Cristian

hey :)

Great question! Best is to go straight into your recommendation: “I recommend X because...”, and then briefly support it with 2–3 key reasons. Only add a short summary if the case was very complex or the interviewer seems lost, but in general, keep it crisp and top-down. It shows confidence and structure.

best,
Alessa :)

Hi there,

I agree with the coaches above. Remember also to check if it makes sense to include next steps, if it does, enumerate them as well and highlight what’s the priority.

Best,

Mari
