Should I reach out to Mckinsey to reconsider sending me Solve assessment

Hi

I am applying to the Business analyst position at McKinsey and received an email outlining next steps . This included a paragraph saying they will only send the solve assesment if only not attempted it in the last 12 months. However I applied to McKinsey last year , so it might flag in their system that it has only been 10-11 months since I took. I am considering emailing them outlining personal circumstances (low income background with no laptop) that affected my score along side professional development such as interning at a consulting firm , working in insights etc.  I would really appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Hi there,

I’d strongly recommend not emailing to ask them to make an exception. McKinsey is very strict with its 12-month policy for Solve, and they rarely (if ever) waive it—it’s an automated global rule. Reaching out with personal circumstances unfortunately won’t change that, and it may risk drawing unnecessary attention to your earlier score.

What you can do:

  • Wait until the 12-month mark—once you’re eligible again, you’ll go through with a clean slate.
  • Strengthen your profile in the meantime—your new consulting internship and insights work are excellent additions.
  • Network—connect with consultants or recruiters to make sure your reapplication is noticed and well positioned when the timing is right.

I know it’s frustrating to sit tight, but it’s better to wait a couple of months and apply with a stronger case than risk raising a red flag by pushing the process now.

Best,
Evelina

Thank you very much for the advice!. I hoped because it is a 1 month difference it wont be a big deal. But seems like it is quite rigid. I’ll work on it for the next year! And it makes sense to not draw attention to the earlier score. Thanks :)

Hi Rithvik,

I wouldn’t recommend pushing McKinsey to make an exception here. Their system is very strict on the 12-month rule, and even strong personal circumstances usually won’t override it. The best move is to wait until you’re eligible again and in the meantime keep strengthening your profile through internships, networking, and practice. When you reapply after the 12 months, your chances will be much better.

best, Alessa :)

Hi Rithvik,

Q: Should I reach out to McKinsey to reconsider sending me Solve assessment?

Given that the score is valid for 12 months for all candidates, it is very unlikely that they will consider any exceptions to that rule.

If feasible, the best option would be to wait until the end of that period and then apply, so that you can take a new test. If you apply now, they will have to use the previous score, which might negatively affect your application if your previous performance was poor.

Good luck!

Hi there,

If you're just 1-2 months short in the cool off period, just ask them to postpone it for when you're eligible in case your CV was approved.

Best,

Hi Rithvik,

It's unlikely that McKinsey would make an exception, irregardless of circumstances. I suggest you request them to reconsider your application 1-2 months once you've passed the 12 months mark.

No, as they won't budge, and it doesn't help your case.

If possible, wait for the full 12 months before applying.
