Should I follow up once more for this job?

Question

So had an interview on July 30th Thursday and was told would hear back the following Tuesday

Got no reply so followed up Thursday and nothing

Last week called and the recruiter was surprised so I assume they did not get my email and they told me the HR manager was on vacation and they would update me that week

So now Monday and nothing so should i do one more follow up by tomorrow perhaps or would that be too annoying or pushy/clingy?

If this is for a European office, August is vacation season, so delays are very common.

I think following up every 1–2 weeks is reasonable and won't come across as pushy, especially since you were told the HR manager was on vacation.

In the meantime, try to focus on other applications or things outside recruiting. I know the waiting is stressful, but another email is unlikely to speed up the process.

Clearly the process has slipped already... I would wait a few more days and then follow-up again.

I'm sorry to hear about this delay. I know it's frustrating.

At this point, you've already followed up and they know they should give you a response, so it's a matter of waiting for that response to come in.

If possible, try to keep yourself busy with something else in the meantime that will help you progress with your recruitment process.

I wouldn’t worry about being pushy. Given that they already told you they would update you and the HR manager was on vacation, I’d send one short follow up tomorrow.

Keep it very simple and positive, something like: “Hi X, just wanted to follow up on the status of my application following our conversation last week. I remain very interested in the opportunity and would appreciate any update when convenient.”

After that, I’d leave it with them rather than following up again immediately. The delay is much more likely to be an internal process issue than anything about your candidacy.

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your situation:

Contrary to what other coaches have said, I would strongly advise you not to follow up a third time. I simply do not see any upside in doing so, while there is a tremendous downside in following up a third time in three weeks. They will come back at you one way or another, and unless you have a tight timeline, you can easily wait a bit longer, as hard as it may be.

Hi there,

The recruiter being surprised usually means it was dropped internally and it also suggests your first follow up never reached the right person.

So I would definitely write again, maybe waiting a few more days. August is also the worst month for this. Approvals end up waiting on the one person who is away, and a delay of this shape at this time of year is usually logistics.

Hi,

this certainly is unsettling. But you have already followed up and even spoken to a recruiter directly. I would therefore give it some more time before giving it another try. There are no silent rejections or things like that. You will receive official feedback eventually. Fingers crossed it is positive. But in any case, continue your application efforts (in case this was not your only place of interest) so you won't lose valuable time.

Given it has been 3 weeks, you can reach out now. Just be polite and to the point. Ask politely if they happen to have an update on the interview and say you're looking forward to it.
