SHL test answer - inductive reasoning

Hello,

I have to take a SHL inductive reasoning online test.

I took the official practice from SHL and there is no solution to the test. I struggled on this question: what would be the answer and why?

Hi there,

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for quite a lot of users, so I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

  • First of all, I would advise you to have a second look at the SHL test set since normally, there always is the solution displayed.
  • Secondly, from my perspective, there might be solely one correct option which is option E. The arrow is like the hour hand of a clock indicating the number of sides of the form.

In case you want a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare abstract reasoning tests, please feel free to contact me directly.

I hope this helps,

Hagen

The answer posted above is incorrect - the correct answer is E.

Imagine the arrow as the hour hand on a clock. Its position corresponds to the number of sides in the shape (3 o’clock for the triangle, 1 o’clock for the ellipse since it has one side).

Thus the possibilities in the answers are B and E.

We eliminate B because it has a black dot in the center. That leaves E as the correct answer.

The number of black dots in the pattern alternates 2-1-4-1, which I would guess corresponds to an odd/even alternation. But they aren’t necessary to solve the problem correctly.

I agree, the answer is E. It is not clear to me why these tests present variables that are irrelevant to solving the problem.
